Winning is "not a matter of life and death," according to the venerable sporting adage coined by former UCLA football coach Red Saunders, "it's more important than that." The reality, of course, is the exact opposite, and that fact was vividly illustrated by the actions of the high school basketball players and coaches of DeKalb, Ill., and Milwaukee Madison earlier this month.During the day of their match-up, Milwaukee's captain, Johntel Franklin (pictured here) had the misfortune of being at his mother's bedside when she succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer. Understandably, he decided to skip the game, but later Franklin changed his mind.
In the second quarter, he arrived late in what was a close game. Because Franklin was not scheduled to play, DeKalb were awarded two free throws for a technical foul. DeKalb's Darius McNeal stepped to the line, and proceeded to purposely miss the shots, bouncing the ball several times on their way to the baseline. McNeal's attempts were rewarded with a standing ovation from players and fans from both teams.
Franklin eventually scored 10 points as Milwaukee won comfortably. Afterwards, players from both teams went out for pizza together. McNeal's take on his meaningful missed shots: "I did it for the guy who lost his mom ... it was the right thing to do."
(If you're the type who cried at the end of "Rudy," you should probably go grab the Kleenex now.)

Amazing Rescues
Jesús García Corona was a Mexican railroad engineer who was killed trying to keep a train loaded with dynamite from exploding near Nacozari de García, Sonora, in 1907. García drove the train at full-steam six kilometers out of the town before the dynamite exploded, killing him and 12 other railwaymen and bystanders, but sparing the population of the mining town.

Prinsendam Rescue A fire broke out on the Dutch cruise vessel Prinsendam off Ketchikan, Alaska on 4 October 1980. The Prinsendam was 130 miles from the nearest airstrip. The cruise ship's captain ordered the ship abandoned and the passengers, many elderly, left the ship in the lifeboats. Coast Guard and Canadian helicopters and the cutters Boutwell, Mellon, and Woodrush responded in concert with other vessels in the area. The passenger vessel later capsized and sank. The rescue is particularly important because of the distance traveled by the rescuers, the coordination of independent organizations and the fact that all 520 passengers and crew and crew were rescued without loss of life or serious injury.

Coast Guard's Hurricane Katrina effort Search and rescue operations alone saved 24,135 lives from imminent danger, usually off the roofs of the victims' homes as flood waters lapped at their feet. Coast Guardsmen "evacuated to safety" 9,409 patients from local hospitals. In total, 33,545 souls were saved. Seventy-six Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary aircraft took part in the rescues. They flew 1,817 sorties with a total flight time of 4,291.3 hours in the air. The air crews saved 12,535. A total of 42 cutters and 131 small boats also participated, with their crews rescuing 21,200. Over 5,000 Coast Guardsmen served in Katrina operations.

I'm from Sycamore, IL, right next to Dekalb, and they are usually our biggest rivals. I must say, after reading this article, I have become a fan of DeKalb coaches. What a fine young man, his parents did well by him. I hope they see these comments, and I hope someone "pays forward" a kind deed to this young man someday. My deepest sympathy to the other young man for losing his Mom. She's smiling on him, I just know it. We all love when someone is good to our child.

I hope this young man does great things with his life; but if he chooses instead to pursue a career in basketball, I hope the best teams are watching this story. All sports teams would benefit from selecting players who have outstanding character rather than thugs with great ball skills.

This is what true sportsmanship is all about. If only everyone was so mature and caring. Bravo to everyone in that building.

Sportsmanship at its worst what team throws a game for any reason even one that tugs on your heart string they were there to play a game not feel sorry for anybody this is why we are a country going down in flames people dont follow rules think changeing them is ok as long as its for a good reason Wrong HONOUR SHOULD HAVE CALLED OUT WIN THE GAME, WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS DEDICATE THE GAME TO HER not make a joke of the whole competition I am shure all the big babies loved what those babies did

Those young men and their supporters are great to hear about. So much crap around and this story restores faith in the human race. God Bless them.
I hope they do go into politics as we need good people in that field.

if high school sports associations can strip victories for penalties, they should also be able to strip losses. both teams should have won that game!

Darius McNeal was the hero of this story because he was not going to let another's misfortune be the reason for winning a game. It's nice to see that there are still decent kids out there.

This is a 'feel good' story? This is moronic. The kid's mother dies and all he wants to do is go play hoops the same day? Hopefully he will grow up some day and think of someone other than himself. And the other kid missing his shots represents... what? He's got to give props to the other kid ? Unbelievable.

The author of this article says that the boy whose mother had passed away came in during the second quarter. Aren't we talking about basketball? Doesn't basketball have two halves. I'm probably wrong because I've never had anything to do with it....I just thought.
Great young men!!! I hope that young gentleman that missed the shots sees what joy he brought to so many people that have read his story. I agree with others that everyone envolved in raising him should be extremely proud.

In our paper, the Dekalb coach argued for 7 min. AGAINST the tech foul. Then he asked his volunteer, "You know you're going to miss those shots, right?" The Kid nodded and proceeded to show his worth. Like the others, I stand and applaud. And yes, may God reward him...and all the others.

i'm proud of this young man; in high school most young kids still play for the love of the game before it corrupts them. my sympathy goes out to this young man and his family. God bless you son; i love reading good things in the news about my great country; it makes my serving in the Army an honor.

Great story. This KID is the the polar opposite of the classless girls' hoops coach who pummeled an opponent 100-0 and was still ordering his team to jack up threes late in the game.

It's so refreshing to read a story about some decent human beings in this world. What's even better than the story is actually reading comments that are respectable and relevant to the story. I get so sick of reading news stories and then having to weed through these vile, disgusting, hateful, bitter and evil comments by people who don't have a shred of decency in their bodies. I applaud all the young people and coaches on these teams and if they continue to practice the same good values they showed in this game they will all go far. I'm glad to see there are still some youth in this country in which we may have some pride. Way to go guys, well done! Well done indeed!
