MBARI researchers recently shot photos of a live Pacific barreleye fish
off California's central coast. The 6-inch barreleye was discovered in 1939, and had only been known up to this point through dead specimens caught in nets. The coolest part of this sci-fi-esque sea creature is that its eyes actually rotate within its see-through head so it can keep a lookout on what's happening above it, to its sides and directly in front of it -- at the same time. The freaky fish finally gets its close-up.
