A study of credit card receipts has shown that Utah residents buy more Internet pornography per capita than any other state.Harvard Professor Benjamin Edelman used billing data from between 2006 and 2008 to determine that the socially conservative state averaged 5.47 adult-content subscriptions per 1,000 home broadband users. On the other end of spectrum, Montana averaged only 1.92.
Much to the delight of liberal commentators, the study also found that eight of the top 10 states in porn consumption voted for the McCain-Palin ticket.
Keeping in mind that those who actually pay for smut are an extremely small percentage of overall Internet porn viewers, this is far from an open-and-shut case of conservative hypocrisy. Instead, porn-lovers in red states may just not understand how the Internet works.
