An Austrian scientist's thorough study of 503 pieces of his own navel fluff has revealed the cause of the phenomenon.Using chemical analysis, Dr. Georg Steinhauser found that the lint contained more than just clothing fiber, but also dead skin, hair, fat, sweat and dust. He hypothesizes that the scaly structure and circular formation of the body hair around belly button rips fiber off of shirts, and then then directs it, along with the yummy cocktail of substances it collects along the way, to the navel.
To prevent belly button fluff, Steinhauser recommends shaving your stomach smooth, wearing worn-down old shirts, or even a belly button ring, which will sweep the fibers away before they accumulate.
Or, for the romantic types, you could just save your fluff every day and eventually fashion it into a lint doll to give to your sweetheart.
