PimpThisBum.com Uses Shock Tactics to Raise Hopes
Leave a Comment
These days everyone has their own Web site, from your tech-challenged grandparents to your ex-girlfriend's cat that always hated you. Now a father-and-son marketing team from Houston are adding the homeless dude who asks you for change every morning to the list by using a controversial URL to draw attention to the plight of the homeless.
Kevin and Sean Dolan launched PimpThisBum.com -- a Web site devoted to documenting the experiences of a local homeless man named Tim Edwards -- last month.
"We wanted to insult people's sensitivities so that they would go to the site and see Tim," explains Kevin Dolan. As well as watching videos and Webcasts in which the 37-year-old star of the site discusses his life on the street, visitors can donate money to help him get back on his feet. (We guess this is what the "pimping" part of the name means -- the Dolans don't appear to be offering Mr. Edwards' sexual services for sale.)
The tactic seems to be working: A treatment center has already volunteered a free 35-day detox program so that Edwards can try to kick his alcoholism, while the man himself says he is grateful for the project and has no problem with being labeled a "bum" in the cause of homelessness awareness.
We're going to assume that "Contribute to the Well Being of This Person of No Fixed Abode Dot Com" was already taken.
