This seems like a recipe for one of those hazy did-it-really-happen-or-did-I-dream-it wasted recollections, so, for the benefit of anyone planning to spend time in Italy soon: That glowing, bright red machine that served you fresh pizza at four in the morning? It was real.

Following its development at the University of Bologna, the Let's Pizza vending machine is set to be rolled out across Italy in the upcoming weeks. The high-tech contraption serves up four kinds of pie for just 4 Euros (currently about $5.30).

And not just old reheated slices, either -- the appliance apparently makes the dough from scratch, tops the pizza with fresh ingredients and cooks the whole thing in just three minutes.

Unsurprisingly, the unveiling of Let's Pizza hasn't gone down well with Italy's proud fraternity of pizza chefs, but creator Claudio Torghele is, at least, admirably upfront about his limited ambitions. "If I want to eat a great pizza, I go to a pizzeria," he explains. "Our product is satisfactory, low cost and available 24 hours a day."

Sounds good to us. Now, who's going to invent a real-life beer scooter?
