The University of Maryland Student Union usually shows independent or foreign films. But this Saturday at midnight the facility will be screening the hardcore skin flick "Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge." University officials agreed to run the movie on the grounds that it would provide students with an alternative to late-night drinking and other dangerous activities. University chaplain Rev. Kyle Ingels disagrees, and argues that promoting porn "runs counter to our efforts to try to form people to be men and women who will go out and contribute to society."
While it's not like the students will be seeing anything that isn't easily available in their dorm rooms, an explicit endorsement of porn by a university certainly is a bold move. Do you think porn is an acceptable extracurricular on a college campus?

OH MY FUCKING GOD! This is exactly why I hate priests and I hate religion. All that priests do is ruin everything for everyone. If something isn't perfectly appropriate, they bitch and they whine until everything is as corny as Disney World. Religion fucking sucks!

I attended a private catholic university on the west coast and the resident director, a bona fide priest, looked the other way one night a year for the annual skin flick night. Attendance was almost mandatory in the all male dorm and female guests were not only encouraged and welcome but well represented in the audience. Somehow, we all managed to graduate and become useful member of society!

I'm sure there is a better way to keep kids from drinking on a Saturday night. I didn't exactly go to Berkley but the College I went had a lot of different little groups that would put on events on Saturday. The anime group was always putting on the newest anime flick. And there was always a good Tekken/Street fighter competition to be had.
I think its a bit weird for a college to show porn. Its kind of like seeing an x-rated flick with your parents.

i think that its fine for the college to show the pornographic movie as long as thats what the students want and obviously the ID at the door to make sure horny 17 yearolds don't come in. cutting off funding is a tad drastic
NYCrants links you to my blog that also discusses the UofM story.
