Employees who use their workplace Internet for personal reasons are 9 percent more productive than those who do not.

"Short and unobtrusive breaks, such as a quick surf of the Internet, enables the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total net concentration for a day's work and, as a result, increased productivity," said University of Melbourne professor Brent Coker, who conducted the study of 300 workers.

While this holds true for employees who spend up to 20 percent of their office time on Facebook and the like, once that threshold of slacking is exceeded Web surfing no longer makes workers more productive.
