The megamouth shark is one of the rarest animals in the world. It is also, it turns out, rather tasty.A fishing vessel in the Philippines accidentally caught the 41st megamouth ever recorded last week. Unfortunately, the 13-foot, 1,100-lb. shark perished as it struggled in the boat's nets.
Despite entreaties from a local World Wildlife Fund representative, who tagged the beast Megamouth 41, the fishermen then decided to make the best of a bad situation. And by best we mean a delicious fish dinner.
While it's sad to see such a unusual and impressive creature meet an ignominious end, we can sort of understand the anglers' point. Megamouth 41 does sound a bit like a fast-food value meal.
For future reference, we hear that endangered shark soup goes excellently with Siberian tiger stew and roasted dodo breast.
