The megamouth shark is one of the rarest animals in the world. It is also, it turns out, rather tasty.

A fishing vessel in the Philippines accidentally caught the 41st megamouth ever recorded last week. Unfortunately, the 13-foot, 1,100-lb. shark perished as it struggled in the boat's nets.

Despite entreaties from a local World Wildlife Fund representative, who tagged the beast Megamouth 41, the fishermen then decided to make the best of a bad situation. And by best we mean a delicious fish dinner.

While it's sad to see such a unusual and impressive creature meet an ignominious end, we can sort of understand the anglers' point. Megamouth 41 does sound a bit like a fast-food value meal.

For future reference, we hear that endangered shark soup goes excellently with Siberian tiger stew and roasted dodo breast.
