Researchers at the University of Denver tracked 218 couples over eight years and found that 90 percent reported a decrease in the quality of their marriage once their first child was born. This supports a previous, much larger, study which revealed parents are more depressed than non-parents.

According to Scott Stanley, a psychology professor who worked on the Denver study, most couples experience diminished marital quality over time, but having a baby accelerates the deterioration.
