Montagues vs. Capulets, Bloods vs. Crips, Olbermann vs. O'Reilly. To this list of feuds for the ages you can now add ... Rolling Cones vs. Mr. Softee. The Thrilla With Vanilla unfolded this week in the normally sedate seaside town of Whitstable, England. A Rolling Cones ice cream van had parked in a prime selling spot by the beach, but trouble brewed when a Mr. Softee truck arrived and claimed the spot as his own.
Undeterred by his fellow frozen-dairy purveyor's license from the local council entitling him to the location, the Mr Softee seller pulled his vehicle right up next to his rival's, blocking both serving hatches and denying vacationers any icy treats.
With the situation at a stalemate, the police were eventually summoned and the license-less Mr. Softee sent ignominiously on his way. One witness, a senior named Don Sims, described the showdown as "like something out of a gangster Mafia film." Which makes us wonder what kind of Mafia films Mr. Sims has been watching.
