During the last lap of Sunday's race at Talladega, Carl Edwards, who was in the lead, suffered a spectacular debris-spraying airborne wreck that cost him the race and wounded seven spectators.Although all the injured are expected to recover, about two spectators a year are killed while attending auto races in America. This makes motor sports our most dangerous sporting event to watch live, easily beating out baseball and hockey, which have had five and three spectator deaths, respectively, since 1970, including the minor leagues.
Find out the most dangerous spectator sport worldwide (and view a video of Edwards' crash) after the jump.
However auto racing has nothing on soccer when it comes to in-stadium deaths. In fact, every few years there seems to be a single soccer-stadium disaster that exceeds decades worth of auto-racing deaths.
The most famous incident took place in 1989, when stampeding claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters at Hillsborough Stadium. But during a 2001 soccer match in Ghana, even more spectators, 129, were killed after fans disappointed with the result began to riot.
Relatively, Carl Edwards' debris-spewing wreck looks pretty benign.
