Another weekend of playoff action in the NBA and NHL was dramatically capped by the Ducks' Todd Marchant, who scored a goal early in a third overtime against the Red Wings, giving Anaheim a 4-3 win over Detroit. The sudden-death format gave the game an urgency that was missing from most of the NBA matchups over the weekend, including series-clinching, nap-inducing wins by Boston, Houston and Atlanta.
We're not suggesting anything as absurd as the NBA adopting sudden death, but it does seem that the lowly NHL gets more exciting come playoff time, while the NBA's playoff system is way too drawn out. (It took half a month to complete one round and they won't have a champ until June!) Then again, it is great to sit back and watch the best of the NBA step it up when it counts, especially newly-crowned MVP and superhuman demigod, LeBron James.

Typically I would say NBA, but their use of the "superstar rule" has just gotten out of control. Just look at the ridiculous nonsense Lebron got away with in the 1st round. He can pick up his dribble to dunk or lay it up a few feet past the half court line, gets to just plow through anyone with impunity and if an opposing player even thinks about defending him, they get called for a foul. And while he's the worst, there are numerous other players who get similar calls. Once David Stern takes a page from Vince McMahon's book and comes clean that the NBA is now simply sports entertainment, it may become worth watching again. Until then, it's hockey time!
