Beat writer Jack Kerouac was an avid fantasy baseball player.Well before what we traditionally think of as fantasy baseball came about, Kerouac invented has own elaborate fantasy games with made-up players and teams that would play seasons and accumulate stats. The "On the Road" author would then write about his imaginary leagues -- down to contract disputes -- in homemade newsletters only he would see.
While he tinkered with fantasy baseball his whole life, Kerouac kept this geeky hobby from his beat comrades.
Really he had nothing to worry about, as we happen to know the original first line of Allen Ginsburg's "Howl" was "I've seen the best minds of my generation destroyed by miniature model trains."

Really, I don't think he'd have given a damn about people knowing about this. You have to wonder whether he went to lengths to hide this game from his friends, or whether his friends had simply been smoking and drinking way too much to remember anything other than baboons as dental assistants and that pulling a William Tell on your wife is generally not going to turn out well.
Also, Kerouac was a straight-laced jock until he got to college. Really, all high school football players wind up playing fantasy sports when they get old.
