Those who feel pressure to look attractive are more likely to fear others will reject them on the basis of appearance.
A study of college students between the ages of 18 and 33 found that women were more likely than men to have a heightened sensitivity to appearance rejection
, and that both sexes are made more vulnerable by internalized media ideals of attractiveness.
Interestingly, the researchers discovered self-perceived attractiveness and overall self-esteem don't quell these fears once a person feels they are being judged on their looks.
