This weekend I saw a horrific bloodbath for entertainment. If you've ever wanted the experience of watching a Roman gladiator match, you don't need a time machine, all you've got to do is head to Delaware and watch Combat Zone Wrestling.Apparently Delaware is some kind of law-free zone for blood sports. I was lured to this event by promises that a guy was going be set on fire in the first match. I'd never been to a pro-wrestling match, but this tournament seemed to me the shadiest. Organized by Combat Zone Wrestling, this aptly named "death match" was to take place in the middle of nowhere (in the backyard of one of the wrestler's parents). The event was BYOB and tickets only cost $20.
When we pulled in, the ticket takers asked if we had brought any weapons. Apparently, fans make weapons at home for the wrestlers to use on each other during the matches.
Read more about the bloodbath and the ensuing MedEvac, after the jump.
After parking, we started drinking immediately, just like everyone else who was there. I guessed there were around 300 people (CZW's Web site claims 800), many of whom looked like they had never had and never would earn more than $20,000 dollars in a year.
The crowd may have been one of the rowdiest I've ever seen, full of women, children and the disabled; everyone was smoking and drinking; drugs were done openly. I would estimate that the average life span of the most audience members wouldn't go past five years from today. They were so haggard, so rough, so obese, that I can't imagine they had much life left in them.
Barbwire, Fire and SyringesThe first match was a "fire match." The ring ropes were made of barbwire with boards tied to the wire that were wrapped in lighter-fluid-soaked rags and set on fire. Yes, barbwire and fire. And this turned out to be the most tame match of the evening.
We saw everything. There were 12 matches: nine death matches as part of the tournament, and three regular wrestling matches. In each of the death matches the stakes were raised: a wrestler getting hit in the head with a cinder block was followed by a guy getting his head sliced open with a Sawzall. A man was hit with a wiffle ball bat wrapped in barbwire. Endless fluorescent light bulbs were shattered on wrestlers' heads and backs. Thumbtack Jack, a wrestler from Germany, brought a case of syringes that he stabbed into his opponent's head, until his opponent pulled the needle out. After putting Jack in a head lock, he stabbed the needle through Jack's cheek.
Engaging the CrowdThere was even an unscripted fight. During the three non-tournament, regular wrestling matches, the crowd went rabid taunting the men onstage for not bleeding for our amusement.
During one of the last matches, the crowd began chanting "worst match ever" and one of the wrestlers took exception to this. He singled out one very vicious fan, grabbed the fan's sunglasses and broke them in half, then took his cap and spit in it. The fan, drunk and enraged, climbed over the railing and tried to pick a fight but only ended up getting choke-slammed by security. He was dragged out wide-eyed, his shirt stretched out and covered in dirt, bleeding from the neck while the crowd jeered him, chanting, "Where's your glasses?"
Nick Gage, Saved by MedEvac
In the final match the two fighters looked like corpses, completely covered in broken glass and blood. They were supposed to break 200 florescent light bulbs on each others bodies, but in the middle of all this shattering Nick Gage (pictured above, in the Jordan jersey) was sliced open so badly he fled the ring for medical attention. All of the remaining wrestlers charged the ring in a violent "the show must go on" battle royal. Even the owner of CZW, who is also one of the wrestlers (the one who was hit by a cinder block), got back in the ring and was promptly thrown back out into a pile of glass panes and florescent light bulbs. Meanwhile backstage, Gage was bleeding to the point that the medical staff called in a helicopter.
They loaded Nick Gage onto the helicopter in a stretcher and he weakly threw up the devil horns to the crowd, much to their delight. Then some douchebags in an SUV started pumping the song "Mortal Kombat" and screaming "Fatality!" at the top of their lungs, which was disturbingly appropriate considered Nick Gage, who was supposed to win the match, might actually die."The horror, the horror ... "
In the past few days I haven't been able to stop thinking or talking about the death match. It has given me bad dreams and put into my mind memories I wish had never been there. When we loaded up the car on Saturday with a case of beer, little did I know that Delaware was about to become my "Heart of Darkness."
"The horror, the horror ... "

Originally i was not to happy with you bashing the company that i love and aspire to be in when i'm older and some of the ways you put things in the article were a bit offensive but i'm very happy that you gave a video response to the comments and you stated it very well. your response was very nice and didn't offend me and i would like to say sorry because i re-read my comment and i was sort of speaking partly with too much emotion so it came out angry. But i have to still say that it isn't for everyone and no one has a right to say bad things about it if they don't like it because some people do. so if you have friends that say bad things about CZW and deathmatches in general tell them not to say that stuff because some people do like it.
thank you,
Isaac K.

I had originally written a few lines as a rebuttal to your original article when I realized you had uploaded a video response. I then watched it.
I don't care if you like or love CZW, wrestling in general, etc etc. I honestly could care less. However, reading your original article then seeing your video response lead me to one basic conclusion:
You are either a hypocritical pussy or typical blogging troll. No need to dress it up or try to disguise it as anything more than you being TRUTHFUL with your feelings of emotional molestation which makes you the pussy OR you are equivalent to a 12 year old forum troll fishing for a response.
Grow up.

well,I wanted to give my two cents about that article when i have some more time on my hands, eventually you(the original poster)did the video response which was well spoken,re-phrasing some of the stuff that was originally written and last but most important made clear that you didn't wanted to degrade or make the fans appear as they are just a bunch of losers that"don't make 20.000 bucks a year"...
well, thank you for your response,i know where you're coming from saying the show "disturbed" you somehow, geez, even i was somehow disturbed when i saw the first music video's,the first matches etc,it's really not for everyone, and even if you usually can take lots others can't czw and that kind of wrestling style makes you at least thinking...some are offended, some are disturbed and never want to see such stuff again, but some enjoy it and see it as it is,a sport, dedicated men(and women)giving the fans their best, each and every time again, just to please them...
there always will be haters, despite the genre, sports, movies, music, whatever it is,you can't please everyone, but you can't ever judge someone for what he likes(well, there's stuff, but not in the same way what we are talking about...)
you said it yourself, you were drinking, cheering, havin fun and all that, there is nothing wrong with that,it's not like in the ancient rome where they HAD to fight each other(or animals)to the death,it's all volunterally,no one is forced to do that, and no one is forced to go to see the show(and i love the states for having that"freedom of expression-thingy" goin on,unlike here where i live...)
well, you were "disturbed" after looking at the pics you took, you weren't when you were at the show, you had a blast, you were one of them fans having fun and watching the show, and don't tell me you didn't liked it^^
Of course people who love the dub(czw)are offended by your words,it's just normal when you get judged by someone"from the outside" for something you love and are passionate about, many of them saw the company grow over the years, been part of historic events/moments,they are part of the family that is c-z-ff'in-w...
trust me,the fans are the best int he world, you don't have such a community in other companies,if you're cool with them, they are cool with you,if you fuck with one of them, they fuck you up!^^
anyhoo, thanks again for the respond and for making clear that some of the things you said were false...
I'm almost sure you'll be in attendance in the future, cause you loved it for sure!^^

many people dont understand the workings of the death match "scene". these guys are not your typical WWE wrestlers they are a at the other end of the spectrum. You said yourself you came to the show to see a guy set on fire, you drank in the lot with the rest of us. if you didnt like it dont come to the next show. what can i say??? but dont you dare past judgement on any other person who attended that show callin us poor obese drug addicts is simply pathetic. you my friend need to re examine your life, a wise man once said let those with out fault cast the first stone

actually shamrock; the one who said it (supposedly) was Jesus himself. and it was something like: let he who is without sin cast the first stone
but it would seem this is his most important commandment:
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12 RSV)
another good one:
Matthew 7:1-2
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
why bring this up? you ask, because: since most people are religious (in some way) and get their idea of morals and values from their religion & according to statistics the US' population is mostly christian (around 78.4% among all adults, infact)
so, keeping with those quotes supposedly from jesus himself (which is pretty much considered as comming directly from the horses mouth to christians)
anyway; keeping in mind all of that: judging someone else (if you're a christian) or someone else judging you (if they're a christian)
makes said individual just as bad in god's eyes, so don't worry what they say (if you believe in christianity; as reguardless: you will have the comfort of knowing that it'll come back to haunt them at the gates) + if they are christian you get the extra added fact of pointing out their hyporcisy in judging you (or anyone else for that matter) by using their own book against them (reguardless of you're own religious beliefs) GOTTA LOVE IT.
my point is that people who are saying "how immoral you are", etc. are technically being just as immoral/bad as they claim you are by judging you (especially if they happen to be christian) gotta love the irony
i'm not a belever in any religion as a fact, but it's still fun to discuss it and point out the ironies of stuf like that. lol.
morality is more of a matter of opinion & perspectave + knowledge of things in the long run, is what i'm saing: sure it LOOKS similar to a gladiator fight, but so did it look like david copperfield made an elephant dissapear. but we don't always take stuff like that at face value (who would have guessed that was as simple as oving a mirror, though?) but people n DMs choose to do them fo one reason or another- that's a big difference (as already said)

I personally do think that this whole form of entertainment is the stupidest thing on earth. But it is also the most entertaining thing on earth which is why I watch. I also do agree about your comments of the crowd. Lot of weird people that I would never want to be associated with. I still think CZW rules though.

please define your use of wierd? or even normal? Isn't the fact that being wierd is what makes us so unique? every single one of us is some how wierd in a way from the president to the lady with all tha cats down the street from you, it is your choice to hang or not to hang out with said people. I to thought Halfbreed billy Gram was wierd at one point now he is one of the people i respect the most in that whole company. My point being you may thing someone is wierd but go to said person and talk to them thay may not be so wierd anymore.
This is wierd!!!!!!!!!!

TOD is the one event a year in the area put on by a worldwide company putting forth the best effort they can for loyal paying fans. It is the one event where fans can dress and drink and act as they please within the realms of respect.
I was in attendance and can bost about my annual income. If you are trying to be a journalist, it is amongst the worst paying jobs out there so, well, I suppose you ought to look for another occupation soon. You can't simply count. There were three hundred people?!?! You counted by .25? No promotion lies about their attendance for fear that the wrestlers feel shorted.
Your write-up is terribly one-sided and not truthfull. Police were there everywhere so for somebody to be openly doing drugs I will suppose even the police in Townsend according to you can't do there job right either.
You went to something aptly-named "Tournament of Death," what in the world did you go for. If you can't find any redeeming value of the events of 6/6/09, you are of the one with a serious problem.

You would have to be brain dead to call this "entertainment". And a big preemptive "fuck you" to all the idiots who are offended by that statement.

actually intelgence doesn't enter into watching something. would you say the same thing about people who watch horror movies or action movies with lost of blood? they're usually more graphic than any DM could ever be. even though Hollywood's fake blood & stuff: they've gotten to the point now (actually for a little while now) where it looks real enough. whether you're watching real or fake gore doesn't matter. it's gore. that's what those movies are watched for more han anything: gore (particularly horror movies)
so don't act so high and mighty. people enjoy what they enjoy. and as long as the participents are willing, then it's not that big of a deal. we have back buttons, remotes & power buttons on things for a reason, ya know? football, boxing, MMA, etc. also takes a big toll on the body after years of abuse. people still love them, though.
