Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.
A study of self-reported drink-spiking victims admitted to an Australian hospital found that none of them actually had their drink spiked with a drug.
Ninety percent of the 100 purported victims were women, and most were under 25. Investigators found in almost every case their level of intoxication matched up with the amount of alcohol they had conceded consuming. Furthermore, toxicology reports didn't find a single instance of a sedative being put in a drink.
Even after being told their drinks weren't spiked, one-third of the "victims" continued to insist that they were.
We tried to use the "my drink must have been spiked" excuse with a girlfriend once. No, we are no longer dating.
UPDATE: This post has upset a few people and we want to address the concerns of our readers. If David Letterman can be self-aware, then so can we. While the findings in the Australian study were interesting and we stand by our decision to report on them, we should have made it more explicit that this was just one individual study and not necessarily representative of a larger trend.
We know the crime of spiking drinks does occur. We also recognize that when it occurs, it can sometimes lead to even more heinous crimes, including rape. We understand the gravity of such evil acts, and we realize that the article may have come across as if we take such acts lightly. For that we sincerely apologize.
We care about our readers and appreciate your thoughts. We hope you'll keep sharing them with us.

I think it would be cool if a chick or chciks spiked my drink, took me home, and had there way with me. And hey, if they were ugly, who cares, sounds like I wouldn't remember much anyway. sweet.

Kelly;
Very well put. You must've been an English major or on the debate team.
You certainly set things straight there with your elucidation...

Kell;
That's not even close to what I said, but what the hay. IF someone gets drugged and raped then, YES, that sucks. BUT if someone drinks 12 beers and loses control, claims they "only had two", then blames everyone else what are WE supposed to do about it? They need an intervention. I'm betting these people also have been kidnapped by UFOs "37 times".
My comment was really about personal responsibilty, which, sadly, seems to be a thing of the past.

1. For the biker, did you pass out or simply fall asleep? Why would anyone have had an incentive to spike your drink?
2. For the bar owner, tonic water and the 'date rape' drug won't affect your blood alcohol level. You might have been Driving While Impared though. BAL over .08 (or standard at time) you were consuming something else.
3. For the women who think they were repeated raped, how do you know if it was one or ten? What did the DNA from the rape kit at the hospital say? What did they measure your blood alcohol level at? What were the toxicology test results for the 'date rape' residue?
Oh, you didn't have any of that done. Sorry, but you consented after the fact.
I have a nephew who is a sheriff's deputy in FL. As part of their training a group of volunteers came in and consumed a measured amount of alcohol on a scheduled basis. Objective was to train them in DUI detection, as well as to demonstrate different people have different tolerances to alcohol. He commended one women was virtually unconscious after a single drink. One guy was still passing the DUI tests with a BAL 2 1/2 times the limit.
Without documented proof I remain skeptical of such stories.

I'm a guy and had a drink spiked in an upscale NYC bar. She managed to get me to my hotel before I passed out (after just three beers and a big meal and I'm 6'3' - 230 lbs., so no, I wasn't drunk) She robbed me, but luckily I awoke about 8 hours later, cancelled my credit card and crashed for another 9 hours. When I made a police report, they had pics of the woman and told me she had drugged more than two dozen guys in the past month. It does happen and women aren't the only victims of drink-spiking. Lesson learned., Never leave your drink unattended.
