While retrieving a radio he'd left on the roof of his summer home, Mike Donigan was attacked by a swarm of hornets, causing him to fall off and fracture four vertebrae, his pelvis in two places, and his right wrist -- injuries that would eventually require almost a month of hospitalization. To make matters worse, he had landed on the wrong side of a steep incline. It took Donigan four hours to crawl 100 feet to the front steps of his home. But the pain was too much for him to attack the landing, and the barely clothed 57-year-old spent the night shivering in the increasing chill.
The next morning, buoyed by thoughts of his wife and kids, Donigan spent two hours scaling the eight required steps and finally made it inside.
When he was able to grab his cell phone, Donigan called 911, and then his employer. If you're wondering why the second call wasn't to his wife, it's probably because she had specifically forbidden him from painting from the roof by himself.

The headline leads us to believe the man actually crawled a whole 16 hours...yet the story actually tells us he crawled a total of 6 hours. If there's one thing I dislike more than airbrushed pictures, it's misleading headlines. Anyway, I hope this man is doing fine now.

yes, he is doing better - but has a long road to recovery. He was working on his soon to be vacation home, which he has been slowly building for a couple of years. This vacation home is more than 4 hours from his regular home, and he knows he is not supposed to work on the roof at any time when his wife is not with him.

I agree I remember a while back here in orlando where a lady fell from the 26th floor and landed on the 16th floor roof, so thats a 10 story drop to her death. The news here reported it as a 26 story fall because she fell from the 26th floor. The news always sensationalizes everything

It's AOL - EVERY headline/subheadline is sensationalized. It's all based a formula - the copy writer is told to find the most sensational tidbit of the story and center the entire headline on that. For this, "Crawl" and "16 hours" were the juiciest tidbits, even though the combo of the two resulted in a misleading headline.
Another example today:
Pfeiffer to Play Catwoman Again?
- No, AOL, no. She isn't. An interviewer asked an obtuse question about Catwoman and how Batman movies are "back" and Pfeiffer said "Oh yeah, it would be really fun. I don't think that's going to happen."
I understand...it's a business model. The juicier the headline, the more people who click, meaning the more page views the site and the partner sites receive, which means they get more ad revenue and fulfill their partner contracts with sites like PopEater and Asylum. Besides, it is AOL, nobody is winning awards for excellence in journalism over there. If it really is news, BBC and the AP do this sort of thing the least.

OK Victoria, you got them. He spent 6 hours crawling and 10 hours overnight just lying around shivering, unable to move (as stated in the story). They are SUCH liars to say that he actually spent 16 hours crawling when in fact, as you so astutely point out, he only actually crawled for 6. The other 10 hours he ATTEMPTED to crawl, but was just in too much pain. Get a life Victoria, or at least learn how to add.

you are absolutely right...it started with Asylum, but AOL picked it up...i find AOL doing this so much that sometimes i can't locate the teaser in the story...very aggravating...

This guy is amazing...very inspiring, especailly for using his close/loving/real relationships with his family to fuel him up those steps. Gives me hope to actually have others mean that much to me so that one day I might climb my own
steps impossible.

Jodie, I believe the story stated the accident happened at his "summer" home. Maybe the family was staying at his "winter" home. I wish him the best. See men you should listen to your wives.

I took it as it took him 16 hours from the time he fell to getting help.. I didnt assume he crawled the whole 16 hours.. I believe with the injuries he would have gotten he would have to rest often.. So I took that as he didnt stand at all he crawled the whole time or laid in a spot he crawled to to get help.. He was at his summer home.. His wife might not have gone with him if she had to work..
I go often to my summer home off ans on with out my husband.. He works I still go..

Don't you hate it when your wife is right? I know I do. I'll bet he thought about ending it all right there so he wouldn't hear a "told you not to do that"

Hey, It;s not just the guys. My husband told me not to climb up on the boat to wash the windows but I did anyway. I caught my foot in the engine strap and fell and crushed my wrist broke my arm and cut both of my legs open on the engine along with three broken ribs. I laid there until a neighbor heard me crying. So guess what it just isn't the guys!
