While retrieving a radio he'd left on the roof of his summer home, Mike Donigan was attacked by a swarm of hornets, causing him to fall off and fracture four vertebrae, his pelvis in two places, and his right wrist -- injuries that would eventually require almost a month of hospitalization.

To make matters worse, he had landed on the wrong side of a steep incline. It took Donigan four hours to crawl 100 feet to the front steps of his home. But the pain was too much for him to attack the landing, and the barely clothed 57-year-old spent the night shivering in the increasing chill.

The next morning, buoyed by thoughts of his wife and kids, Donigan spent two hours scaling the eight required steps and finally made it inside.

When he was able to grab his cell phone, Donigan called 911, and then his employer. If you're wondering why the second call wasn't to his wife, it's probably because she had specifically forbidden him from painting from the roof by himself.
