Last week, as reported on these very pages, a truck carrying 90 pigs overturned on an Arkansas interstate, closing the road for most of the morning.After the accident only 50 of the hogs were accounted for, and we've been breathlessly awaiting word on what kind of trouble the other 40 could get themselves into.
Well, it looks like at least one of the fugitive swine has been captured. And it should come as no surprise to anyone who has endured an Arkansas summer that this "ham on the lam" was found in the swimming pool of a local couple.
The 800-lb. porker had been marked for the slaughterhouse before the accident, but because no one knows what kinds of terrible things he ate during his week on the run he will now live out the rest of his natural life on a farm -- no doubt reflecting on his glorious glimmer of freedom.

Been to a slaughter house...even let my kid take an eyeball for a show and tell. Still love to eat meat...even pork. The only meat I won't eat is Kosher, where they practice unhumane treatment. I wish people would walk a mile in others shoes before they judge and speak of things they know nothing of.

Amanda, you have no clue what you speak of. Most of the only abuse that animals are subjected to comes from other animals. These food animals are feeding, caring and paying the bills for some farmer and his family. The slaughter house has an inspector on premise to verify the humane treatment. Why don't you go to Africa and protect the wildlife from the lions that visciously eat their prey alive, starting in that incredibly sensitive area under the tail and working their way up their backs while writhing in pain! You live in a fantasy land and probably need OCD meds. You want to get a better environment for the food animals, then petition the government to stop making rediculous rules requiring animals to walk into the slaughterhouse on their own. It is more humane to shoot an animal with a broken leg than to be forced to make it walk...This rediculous rule was probably put into force by some idiot like yourself that has never farmed or worked hard for your money. Just keep buying youR tofu on food stamps...just please watch me enjoy my steak with blood running down my face....yumm!

All you swine lovers don't realize that we now have more of them for eating than there would be if we didn't breed them for that purpose. And in some states the wild boars are tearing up fields and threatening the other live stock. Here in Texas the javalinos are stewed and made into tamales, and if done right, taste delicious, but if left to their own devices, destroy crops.
