Like attempting to achieve Zen, finding the perfect undershirt sometimes seems unattainable. The stable of brands is endless, yet each has its own unique character that often doesn't feel quite right. Sizing is a major part of this, but let's not forget factors like thickness, softness, how well the pits breathe and the inherently homoerotic packaging.

In Asylum's ongoing, desperate search for the perfect undershirt, we came across Tommy John's "Second Skin" collection. (All right, we didn't just come across them. The publicist sent us a couple.) Editors Anthony Layser and Gordon Hurd gave them a try, and this is what they found.

Check out the review, after the jump.

Second Skin Crew (pictured)
Pro: The crew boasts a silky smooth feel with an obvious attention to the details around the sleeves, neck and seams. Being able to stretch it down well below your waist means it may never come untucked -- virtually negating any possibility of plumber crack.

Con: If you spend any amount of time trying to ignore the shape and volume of your gut, the Second Skin lives up to its name. Be prepared to feel that spare tire bouncing upon every step. It also makes wearing underwear on the tight side feel just that much tighter -- i.e. wedgie alert.

Second Skin Deep V
Pro: The Deep V is part of Tommy John's outerwear collection, so it doesn't hug the torso like the crew. It's got the same super-soft feel due to this stuff they call "Micro Modal" fabric. Seven percent of the material is Lycra, so it forms to your shape, which, for some (see above), is technically a con.

Con: For both shirts, the retail price comes in just under $40. So if you like wearing the same brand every day, you're looking at three figures to fill your drawer. That being said, these will last longer than 100 percent cotton tees that, like Oprah, are constantly shape-shifting.
