Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.

A new study has shown having a beer belly is predominately the result of genetics.

German and Swedish researchers tracked 20,625 people for over eight years and found that even though regular beer drinkers weighed more, their fat didn't necessarily amass unevenly around the gut.

In fact, increases in hip-to-waist ratio were randomly spread out among all drinking groups, leading to the conclusion that it is genetics -- not a certain way in which excess calories are accumulated -- that leads to a beer belly.

Meaning those with a stomach that can double as a TV tray didn't earn this luxury through dedicated beer pounding, but rather just won the genetic lottery.
