People who suffer from low self-esteem feel worse after repeating positive self-help mantras. Canadian researchers asked study participants to say "I am a lovable person." While this exercise slightly buoyed those who already felt good about themselves, it actually made the ones in need of higher self-esteem more depressed.
In fact, low-self-esteem sufferers cheered up when they were allowed to focus on negative thoughts. The researchers believe this is because unreasonably positive statements can trigger frustratingly contradictory thoughts in those who don't really believe them.
Coincidentally, our fingers are currently in our ears as we repeatedly dismiss this study's "stinkin' thinkin'."
