I don't get it either. I always see "after the jump" and wonder, sometimes out loud, what the hell does that mean!?

It's if the blog pops up in someone's rss feed reader then only the first bit will be shown, so they have to click the rss post and "jump" to the full article (similar to opening up a *fold*ed newspaper to read a full article). If the blog is really short then the whole blog will fit into the rss feed but if it's a large picture then it will only be included on the actual blog site, hence "pics after the jump" etc.
That's my understanding of it anyway.
