Many cats learn to use an urgent, high-frequency meow to manipulate people into feeding or paying attention to them. The meow in question is actually a mix of a purr and a cry, and felines usually only use it with their owners, who struggle to ignore it. Researchers recorded 10 versions of this purr-cry, and even when they played them for non-cat owners, the participants were made uncomfortable and recognized the urgency.
Not all cats develop this manipulative meow, and it is more frequently found in felines who have intense relationships with their owners.
We're currently awaiting further studies that show this meow also encourages aging single women to seek out more cats and read Danielle Steel novels.
