Nothing says summer like a round a miniature golf. But instead of wasting the warm weather at tired old Putt Putt, why not check out one of America's many weird and wild "themed" miniature gold courses?
We've sifted through some of these more eclectic offerings, and issued the best of them awards which should help you establish which one suits your mini-links needs.
Best for a First Date
At Lake George, N.Y.'s Around the World in 18 Holes, each hole represents a different nation. So if that initial mini golf date turns into something lasting, you've just bought yourself a lifetime of snide "I took you to France the first time we went out" remarks. Women are particularly fond of this joke when it's made during an Atlantic City honeymoon.
Best for Lapsed "Lost" Fans
The premise of Mayday Golf in Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- which is that players (along with their putter) have been marooned an on abandoned tropical island that happens to house a world-class miniature golf course -- is as ridiculous as the last couple seasons of "Lost." But hey, at least mini golf gets you off the couch and lets you make up your own wacky numerological conspiracies with your scorecard.
Check out farm-themed, Bible-themed and mortality-themed courses, after the jump.
Best of the "Most Unusual" category
Par-King Skill, a suburban Chicago favorite, dubs itself the world's most unusual golf course, and, out respect for the half-century-old course, we are not going to disagree. It features an elaborate roller-coaster hole made out of over 750 wood pieces, and a Sears Tower hole which is understandably not to scale.

Best for the Whole Family
Putz n Glo Miniature Golf in Rapid City, S.D., offers glow-in-the-dark fun for the kiddies, five decades of the best rock and roll for the teens and adults and, since it's housed in an 8,000-square-foot indoor facility, you can even bring your albino cousins!
Best for the Recently Bereaved
Death is part of life, so there's no point moping around and not playing miniature golf when a loved one passes away. Instead bring that fresh corpse to Ahlgrim's Acres, a Palatine, Ill., funeral home which offers a free round of mini golf in their mortuary-themed basement course with every standard funeral package.

Best to Get You Back to Your Agrarian Roots
The shining sun of summer can act as stark reminder that you spend your days wasting away in a cubicle, creating nothing of tangible value. It almost makes you want to run over to the nearest farm and start milking a cow. Only farmers don't really like when you do that, and cows smell. Instead head over Ripley's Old MacDonald's Farm and Mini Golf in Sevierville, Tenn., where three 18-hole courses are peppered with animatronic farm animals who bark, moo, cluck and remind you of the agrarian spirit that helped make this nation great.

Best for the Bible-Thumpers
The Lexington Ice Center features three biblically themed mini golf courses -- Old Testament, New Testament and miracles. It was also rated one of the 10 best miniature golf destinations in America by the Travel Channel, so even the more secular among us can appreciate the high-quality play. While we have yet to get out to Kentucky ourselves, we are going to assume that the Old Testament course is the least forgiving.
Best for a Return to Piracy's Whimsical Past
Remember when being a pirate was all about peg legs, puffy shirts and shouting "Shiver me timbers"? You can experience that ironic kitsch all over again at any of the locations of Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, which offers 18 holes of buccaneer-themed mini golf without a single AK-47-toting Somali in sight.

Putt-Putt was created in Fayetteville, NC by the late great Don Clayton. He literally invented the sport right off of Ft. Bragg Blvd. there.
ALSO, MAYDAY is NOT in Myrtle Beach. It is 15 miles north of there in North Myrtle Beach. In fact, it's nearly across the street from the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce office.

Nice of you to put an indoor golf course for us melanin-deficient mini-golf fans. :) If only my cousins weren't too stoned to take anyone golfing.

Putt-Putt is a type of miniature golf. The same is true of Adventure Landing. Notice also the hyphen in the name. I play on one of the Professional Putters Association tours.

I love, how there are about 25 plus comments tearing this article apart. Its about mini golf, not a nuclear threat, Jesus. Who cares, and second of all please at least learn to spell as you attack this "lesser" journalist over not knowing which s-hole town is in either s-hole ND or s-hole SD.

I understand this article is SUPPOSE to be about mini-golf but since the poor journalism seems to be the issue of the day I'll just jump on the bandwagon. The big thing that shocks me is everyone being so surprised by this poor article. I think this is par for the course for AOL. I think I can truly say I've seen some of the DUMBEST articles ever written posted on this internet site. They will write an article about an issue which may interest 5 entire people in this world. They do everything in their power to take a dull, mundane subject or event and make it seem thrilling and exciting. I've seen them try to discredit, harm, embaress, humiliate, and destroy Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) more times than I care to count. Now I'm not a Hannah fan, I'm a 48 year old single professional woman who is NOT into teeny-bopper music. BUT, I can spot a hatchet job when I see one. This kid would be eating something and they would snap a picture and turn it onto the most OUTRAGEOUS article filled with inuendos and hype all to catch more attention. It was SICKENING. I actually wrote to AOL but I'm sure no one paid any attention. The AOL site as far as credible, acurate, and interesting and reliable news is concerned is just a hair above Perez Hilton. And I think that man is just about the BIGGEST slimeball in this country right now. He literally makes my skin crawl thinking about him. Organizations like AOL news and Hilton are the type of leaches who thrive off of other's suffering, achievements and fame. At least the author here of this sad, pathethic little article didn't go around inventing the truth like Hilton. This writer Hilton's worst crime was being just damn lazy, putting NO effort into his work. Whereas Hilton, if he can't find interesting material, he'll just make it up. Taylor received a decent fee for his work, Hilton has become wealthy off the HARD work many other celebrities (except Paris Hilton, she's just as bad, she's famous for doing NOTHING) have put into their careers, their sports, and their lives. Hilton is like that parasite that lives off the blood of other animals. When Perez Hilton starts posting articles on AOL, that IS when I'm leaving this site. Maybe this will turn out to be a good learning experience for Taylor when he sees that the public can recognize what a crappy job he's doing. Maybe next time we can hope we'll see a better quality of work come out of this man. I hope so, it couldn't get much worse.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 18 HOLES is definetly the best mini-golf course that I've ever played on. When my family and I used to go on vacation to Lake George, that was always a spot that we went to several times during the week. There was (I hope it's still there) a fantastic ice cream stand next door.

I would agree with everyone that this is not a great article. As someone who runs a miniature golf course review website (www.theputtingpenguin.com), I've seen many articles like this which almost always have the same handful of courses. One of the problems is that they make no distinction between "best" and "most bizarre". While the Mayday Golf and the Pirate's Coves certainly can be up with the best (we've played those), the Lexington One (which we've also played) is bizarre, but not the best place to get your minigola mojo on. In orde to write an article like this, one needs to play a ton of miniature golf.
For what it's worth the best course of the 106 we've played is Peril's of the Lost Jungle in Herdon, VA. There's also a ton of smaller courses out there that are awesome.
If you'd like to share your own opinions on minigolf courses please visit our website. I think you'll find a little bit better commitment to minigolf there.

As far as this article not being "professional", I think you guys are all getting bent out of shape. Clearly it is merely meant to give a quick rundown of some Mini putts around the area. I would imagine that if one were to really "write" an article about all the mini putts in existence, the article would be too long and would not be read. That being said, if one were truly interested in knowing what miniputts are near, they could always google.
We build indoor / outdoor mini golf courses and would have loved to have been included in this article, but... What can I say? except check us out: http://bit.ly/HPgs
