Men earn a higher average salary for every inch of height. An Australian study, which backs up previous studies from the United States and England, has found that each 2 inches of height equals 12 month of extra experience, or about $800 a year in extra pay.
The researchers weren't sure if this was more about taller men commanding more respect, or shorter guys getting discriminated against. They did point out that fat people also used to get the salary shaft, but that discrepancy has disappeared now that so many people are overweight.
Coincidentally, this is the socially relevant story arc of the upcoming film "Little Man 2: Glass Ceiling."

As a 5'6" middle manager, it is my experience that this discrepancy stems in part from the ability to "dress for success." Mens fashion at major retail outlets bottom out at 30"x30" for pants, which forces me to either get alterations or to shop in the boys department. While it is not always evident that your polo shirt and khakis came from Gap Kids, the choices available for suits or other strictly business attire are much more limited.

At 5'5" I find the biggest issue is just a general lack of respect, I think it goes much deeper than clothing. It's not just earnings I remember a report on 20/20 or something where even women discriminate against shorter men, they just assume taller people are more successful and find them more attractive. I don't think anything will be done about this issue, you have to be a short man to understand and I don't think there are enough short men in the halls of power to do anything. Plus it's probably almost impossible to prove I got offered less money specifically because I am short.

Being short is a struggle for any man it doesnt come easy to fit in.I am 45 and my height is 4'11 in my workplace i am the shortest in my office.I have the nickname littlelegs has when i sit on the work chairs i poor legs dangle.I am always having to ask for help in reaching files on the top shelves and now i have my own stool to use which makes it easier.there is nothing worse than having to keep asking for help reaching something especially when the nearest per is a woman and she is 5'9.I tried wearing lifts at work but i found them uncomfortable and when people found out they just laughed about it no end.It took me ages to find a decent woman to accept me and to me she is perfect she is obviously taller than me as she is 5'2 and on occassions likes to wear shoes with abit of a heel it doesnt bother me anyway.Mostly because by now i am okay with it.At home it feel normal when we are together has i no longer have to keep looking up to talk to people and being similar in height to my wife add that bit more pleasure for me.We have a son who is 16 and he is 5'0 he is doing everything possible to gain more height as she hates being the shortest out of his friends.I think he may reach about 5'4 i am hoping anyway for him.Our daughter is 15 and she is 5'4 and usually likes to put people in their place when friends say something horrible about her brothers height.I think it is just a learning curve in life and we should all be accepted and respected no matter how different we are to some people.
