Before "Sex in the City," there was "The Golden Girls," another show about four man-crazy single women who lived in a city and talked an awful lot about sex.
And, like "Sex in the City," you've probably seen the "Golden Girls" at least one more time than you'd be quick to admit. But, really, there's no shame if you spent some of your Saturday evenings with Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia and Rose. Especially since you were about 9 and those were some dirty-talking old broads.
After the jump, we compare the blue-haired ladies who thanked each other for being a friend every week between 1985 and 1992.
Sophia (Estelle Getty) Due to a stroke that supposedly zapped the part of her brain which regulated social tact, Sophia was a one-elderly-woman wrecking machine of wise-cracking, spaghetti-cooking mean. Getty more or less reprised this blunt but lovable role in "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot," a film that did irreparable harm to Sylvester Stallone's career.
Blanche (Rue McClanahan) As the name suggests, Blanche Devereaux, was a Tennessee Williams-flavored Southern Belle with an insatiable appetite for man meat. What made it weird was that she was also old. If "The Golden Girls" were running today, this character would probably inspire horrifying trend articles about "GILFs."
Rose (Betty White) Rose is the reason a whole generation of Americans think everybody from Minnesota is a good-natured fool. (Although that redheaded neighbor from "The Hogan Family" wasn't doing the state any favors either.) Interestingly, Betty White was initially slated to play Blanche, and Rue McClanahan Rose. (Also, we're rather biased; after all, Betty White rocks, so just go ahead and vote for Rose.)
Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur) Every sitcom needs a straight man to prevent all the colorful characters from melting into a nebula of incoherent wackiness. And Dorothy was that straight man. In fact, her deep voice and male-size body was a running source of amusement for her roommates -- yet another reason "The Golden Girls" could be a confusing, and slightly scary, show for small children. And if you haven't had enough, take Lemondrop's Golden Girls personality quiz and find out which of these old ladies you have lurking inside you.
