The optimal temperature for sleeping is between 60 and 68 degrees.Researchers have found that once the thermostat dips below 69, core body temperature begins to decrease, which facilitates sleepiness. Insomniacs usually begin with higher-than-average core temperatures before bed, which is why it is so difficult for them to fall asleep.
As sleep comes and core temperature drops, the hands and feet actually get warmer. In fact, some studies suggest the best way to get a good night's rest is a cool room with a hot water bottle placed at the feet.
We are attempting to get confirmation of these studies, as that sounds suspiciously like a camp prank which ends up with your bunk-mate wetting himself.

I know I hate sleeping when it's 80 plus degrees out so I guess this is right

My room does not get heating or cooling because our house was build different. I live a few miles from Chicago so in the winter my room gets to be 40 or below. I've gotten so used to sleeping with 3 plus extremely thick quilts, multiple pairs of socks, and sometimes two sweatshirts on. Now when we go on vacation in the winter I open the windows regardless if its snowing because the cold air is the only way I can sleep.
