Occidental College, a liberal-arts-sort-of institution over in Los Angeles, is now offering a course in stupidity for those sick and tired of all the learnings and knowings associated with them smart kid classes in college. Falling under the umbrella heading of critical theory and social justice, the course description assures us that stupidity is "one of the most powerful determinants of human destiny," a statement at once profound and horribly, horribly sad.
Elitist snobs will be happy to learn that the course covers the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, finally giving some scholarly credence to the theory that wearing black turtlenecks and hanging out in coffee houses all day is, in fact, stupid.
The description continues: "Stupidity, which has been evicted from the philosophical premises and dumbed down by psychometric psychology, has returned in the postmodern discourse against Nation, Self, and Truth and makes itself felt in political life ranging from the presidency to Beevis and Butthead." Call us crazy, but we didn't think stupidity could be dumbed down.
On the other hand, we know how to spell Beavis.
