Its very hard to relate that disease to a certain kind of food the person ate since it does not manifest in a short period of time.
I also wouldnt eat brains but if you want to then... sure just do it.

Thing is, what she said is well documented if you could be bothered to google it. I wouldn't eat the brains of any animal no matter how it had been cooked. No matter what you eat you run a risk. But I'm not gonna take an even bigger risk knowing how things like mad cow disease can mutate into other animals EASILY.

While I applaud a mom-and-pop store that serves what is apparently tasty, quality food, I think it's not fair for you guys to attack Francesca and those who voice concern over eating brains. Honestly, these diseases are no joke, and they don't "take a million years to be harmful;" they kill you rather horribly in a few short, brutal months to years.
Now for some nerdy science stuff for those that may care (lol):
"Mad cow disease" isn't just limited to cows, its a type of prion disease that can be found in any mammalian neural tissue. This is why eating low-grade ground-meat is so dangerous- because you up the risk of incorporating infected tissues from the brain and spinal cord into the mix of meat. It is unfortunately rather easy to have nearly any of the prion diseases that can occur in livestock spread to many animals when the slaughterhouses are feeding the scraps of previous animals to their cattle, sheep, pigs, etc. If the Hilltop Inn knows the supplier of the meat, and the supplier does not engage in this practice, then it should be fine. The brains and any other neural tissue eaten on purpose or by accident should, theoretically, be safe.
(Unless you happen to get the brain with a random mutation in it, but worrying about random mutations isn't very manly, is it? lol).

Thank you LJ, I am an RN and yes I have seen people die of "mad cow" disease.So melissa,I am bound by law not to disclose medical information of patients so therefore I cannot give you specific information.I am not in any way part of the PETA crowd. I grew up on farmland ,daughter of a hunter.I only eat fish and poultry now.So Booand theBonzai... sure salmonella may and does kill...SOMETIMES !!! vCJD Always kills !!!

People who don't understand enough about BSE (Mad Cow) and a need to look into it more. I am very much a non-"conspiracy theory" believer. However, I read a book on BSE and how it was discovered to be resposible for an increase in Creutzfeldt-Jakob (variant CJ) disease, especially in the U.K. I though maybe it was just written by an over-zealot, so I looked up some stuff on the FDA website. They are obviously deathly afraid of it, travelling overnight to destroy tons of contaminated beef that got intermingled with one single cow. The more I looked the worse it got. This stuff is unbelievably insidious. It crosses species boundaries like nothing else, it has been transmitted to brain surgery patients from sterilized instruments. A Yale study in 1989 showed 13% of some thought to have died from Alzheimers actually had CJ.
Why do you think the gov came down so hard on that slaughterhouse that was forcing downer cattle through the lines - not because it was mean to cattle, but because they know that means BSE in the food supply. I am a manly athletic dude, but I have taken my family off beef until they can get stricter protections in place. The epidemic is an abomination from making cattle cannibalize through their feed. The implications are vast. Look into it.
