British cops are officially way more awesome than any of their international counterparts today, thanks to a new experiment being conducted in an upscale London neighborhood. In an effort to teach people not to leave valuable items in their cars, police officers will be wandering the streets looking for stuff to steal. If you don't have your doors locked, the cops will take your stuff. Because they're cops, they'll also be kind enough to leave a note explaining what happened, but the point is to teach people to be more responsible.
"The message to car owners is: 'Help us to help you,'" said Richmond Police Chief Inspector Duncan Slade in a statement.
So far the cops have only committed one robbery, while a couple dozen other potential capers were foiled when the car owners showed up.
In theory the idea seems both awesome and hilarious. But if we were wily thieves hearing of this public campaign, we'd just start leaving notes blaming the police when we stole stuff.

Things must be quiet in the UK if they have nothing better to do.

Something like his happened to my cousin, about 15 years ago. He went out to eat, and when he returned to his car, it was gone. After he called the police to report it stolen, he was informed his car was stolen by an undercover cop, who had infiltrated a chop shop and had 'stolen it' for the chop shop. Luckily his car was returned to him, unharmed.

but if you left a couple hundred bucks- or pounds, or what ever- with a note saying, good job, constable- could the car owner be arrested for attempted bribery....

This is crazy. I was arrested a few days ago, and when I got out and went to get my car almost $200 was missing! The cops are trying to say Im a liar but trust me, Im very frugal and keep track of my money, and $200 was taken from my car. Cops are So corrupt! Its so sad that you can trust law enforcement, or anyone else these day!

There are a LOT of crooked cops everywhere,in my opinion, you could not pay me enough to be a cop,but the bad thing is ,they mess with the good citizens who are out trying to make a living and maybe make a little mistake, while all the THUGS are allowed to do whatever,THE COPS ARE SCARRED OF THEM!And honestly I don't blame them for being scared,I mean the good Cops, not the under the table Cops,They have a littl pistol and the thugs have OZZIES.AK47s' and what ever else bad money can buy or Bad cops can steal out of the evidence room.It looks like all the good people had better be buying guns and amo, because we are going to be fighting COPS AND CROOKS at the same time.

This is insanity. How much are the liberal morons going to heap on us because OTHER people don't know how to behave?! The stupid thing is that sooner or later, a cop is going to cop a purse, said purse having the "careless" owner's heart medicine in it, the unexpected temporary denial of which leads to an unfortunate, and actionable, death. If the cops have enough time to TRAIN the officers to not take something critical AND they have time to go around looking for people who have not technically committed any crime, then obviously, the problem is TOO MANY COPS!

If they had any brains at all, they would NOT TOUCH The item, just drop a bright red note on it, saying, "I just stole your - DVD Player", and on the back of it, "Not really, I'm a cop. But if I was a thief, it would be gone. Secure your stuff". Or something to that effect.

Wow! You caught me completely off-guard. This actually makes sense, and you sound like someone with an IQ higher than 60. So, what are you doing here? Don't you know this part of AOL is reserved for morons? A perfect example is the post ahead of yours. The mindless twit has somehow figured that this program will lead to someone dying of a heart attack. Even though, as the article states, only one item has been taken so far in the entire universe. An amazing leap, considering that in my entire life, and most likely in the entire combined lives of everyone reading this, no one has ever died from leaving their purse in their car with their heart medication in it because it was taken by a cop, or thief, or anyone else. But if it ever happens, apparently it will be the fault of liberals.

If you think that's bad, check out the Minneapolis Star-Tribune stories on the Gang Strike-Force problems. The undercover cops have been robbing innocent citizens under the guise of "confiscating suspected drug money". Helluva lot worse than leaving notes and returning the money. Cops are people too, in all ways.

Police have no business entering anyone's private vehicle without a search warrant. Accepting this kind of treatment is what leads to a police state.

It's my opinion this new,"Let's teach the citizens a lesson" law, is nothing more than a scheme the police dept. thought up to make some extra dough. How? I'm just guessing, but more than likely there's a lot of folks that are going to say things like, "'F' it, I'm not going down to claim those item(s) taken from me." And, for whatever their reason(s) for actually not picking up their personal belongings, the end result is going to be the same: A big, fat, negative blimish on the police department's image. But who cares, right? Obviously not the teachers'--Why? I just told you, that's their objective (in my opinion of course) is to get out there and make that buck--I mean, eh, eh, no it's to teach you a lesson--yeah, yeah, that's it.

Bob is right. This seemingly innocent intrusion is the sign that a police state cometh....

I agree with most of the opinions here, but, we as americans live under a different set of laws. Other countries have laws to fit thier society. Why is it that we, as americans, feel everyone else should live by our rules? Think about it, how bizaar are some of the laws we have to live by. For the person that mentioned a search warrant, maybe the U.K has no such law. I do not agree with what they are doing, but I cannot condem it either.

I was arrested 6 years ago here in California for, get this >>> "filpping my ashes out the window." I was pulled over by Anaheim police. When I asked him "what did I do?" he replied, "you're flipping your ashes out the window." I was somewhat shocked and laughingly said "I didn't know I was in Communist China." I was then told to step out of my car, searched and handcuffed and told I was under arrest for, get this one >>> "terrorist threats." To make a long story short my car was impounded and in court I was threatened with the three strikes law (from when I was a stupid teenager) and sentence to 16 months. I am 63 years old today. I know this is an impossible story for people to believe but I have the paperwork and people might tell the story to are definitely shocked!

COngratulations!! The competition is pretty stiff, but you managed to win the Most Completely Moronic Idiot award! You must be so proud. You've obviously been practicing a long time and put in a tremendous effort to be so incredibly stupid. Who would you like to thank first, your parents, or the person that performed the radical bilateral lobotomy? Just remember, don't sit on anything sharp - you wouldn't want to poke yourself in the eye.
