Tommy Christopher is a columnist and White House/media reporter for Mediaite.com, proprietor of DailyDose.us and Asylum's resident gonzo journalist. As with any endeavor, covering White House press briefings comes with its own set of specific challenges, pitfalls and fauxs pas. In the event that any of you ever find yourselves working in the Brady Briefing Room, I feel it is my duty to enumerate some of these.
First, here's my recent double-play:
1. The "Pit Check"
Look, my hand was already up, it was a hot day, and I just wanted to be sure. The good news is that my Axe Bullet did the job. The bad news: My maneuver was caught on camera.
The lesson here: Always be conscious of the cameras. There are lots of them, just waiting for you to scratch or sniff the wrong thing.
2. Mute Your Frakkin' Phone!
This is particularly embarrassing for me, because a few months ago, there was a cell-phone-plagued briefing, and I was a total prick about it. Gibbs actually confiscated one reporter's phone (John Gizzi's), but you won't believe what CBS News's Bill Plante did later in that same briefing:
After that, my friends started calling me at every briefing, trying to catch me unmuted. Yesterday, they succeeded.
3. Nobody Puts Major in the Corner
This next clip, featuring Fox News's Major Garrett, underscores an underlying tension at briefings. The reporters in the front two rows see it as their duty to have long, leisurely chats with Gibbs, while the rest of us hope there's enough time left to dole us out a few crumbs. Here, Major throws a minor fit when he gets flagged for belaboring. Start watching at the 30:40 mark.
4. Keep It Safe
The brave new world of online journalism means wires, lots of wires. Since the briefing room is set up like the coach cabin of a 767, you've got to be careful where you plug yourself in.
I found this out about a month ago, as I carried my laptop down the aisle, wrapped my foot around the cord, and faceplanted. Luckily, I saved the laptop. Unluckily, there were no cameras to capture the moment. I also have a scar as a reminder of my White House knee-owie.
5. Bring an Umbrella
In D.C., the weather can change on a dime. In April, I found out the hard way, as I ignored threatening skies and left my umbrella in the car when I went to cover a Tea Party protest across from the White House. After two hours in the rain, even Gibbs took pity on my drowned-rat appearance:

Bev
I dont think the Obamas want to visit you; and I dont think any president would invite you for a visit. Your comment says a lot about your station in life, suggesting the lower rung of the socio economic ladder.

Hey, if Bev is on a lower rung, wouldn't obama give her a check, free healthcare and the right not to do anything she didn't want to? All the education in the world can not buy you common sense.

Brenda Green, your response to Bev was not only inappropriate and drew conclusions from your own bias and not from facts derived from her comment, but you dared to speak of class when you can't even spell. I am going to draw my own conclusion from your comment here...you lack intelligence, believe in THIS president for some inane reason (such as his color, or his policy to rip off hard working people and reward the lazy) or some other equally idiotic reason. Don't rip apart Bev or anyone else unless you can even partially grasp the implications of what this adminstration is up to and its impact on the people of our country (all of them). And by the way, this IS the Obama administration, why do people continue to answer important questions about HIS poor decisions with "campaign blame game diversionary tactics" concerning the Bush administration - that had a demoncratically controled congress? (BTW Brenda, I don't expect you to have the brain power to answer this question)

Good decision to not be part of the propaganda photo-op for Slick Willy. We have the right to not be used for that, and both Slick and Barry never met a camera they did not like. The Obama Cult of Personality he so crafted from Castro is coming to a quick end. We are sick of seeing him every day on TV like a self-appointed fearless leader. Time to be just as critical of him as we were of Bush.

Oh Annette,
I must say I do agree that no one should attack poor Bev, even if she sounded outright hateful.
But shouldn't we also NOT accost dear Brenda for hating the hater so artlessly? And how's about us civilized folk not harbor such resentment when others fail to use spellcheck... what d'ya say? After all no one's perfect. Not presidents past who left us engulfed in a horrific recession, nor our present Pres. who is arguably guiding us down a painful path in the process of ultimately trying to make it better.
But I do wholeheartedly agree with one statement you made regarding Congress under President Bush... it did certainly feel like it was, how did you put it? "a DEMONcratically controlled congress" at times. (Hope you don't mind I corrected the spelling of 'controlled'. I assume the spelling of Demoncratically was intentional.
Peace.

Lordy me, what is this world coming to when we have to have "teachable moments," like we're 5-year-old, bugger-eating Kindergarteners, in order to know how to behave and use common courtesy in the presence of our nation's leader?

Major Garrett probably "underscores tension" because he seems to be the ONLY REPORTER in the briefing room. I can't believe some of the insipid questions asked of Gibbs, and even if one question gets close to being interesting, they don't follow up with Gibbs blows them off.
Based on this stupid article, you must fight to sit in the front row so you can gaze lovingly at "the chosen one"("reporters" really do this and it's funny to watch them). Tonight's speech should be fun to watch. I would like to see if Pelosi jumps up as much as she has at previous speeches. What a crazy witch.

Anyone that bashes Obama is clearly racist for he hasn't even had the chance to do anything yet. We all bashed bush because he consistently lied to the country, and he couldn't even speak. Not to bash all republicans, but if you are not wealthy and you vote for a republican you are voting against your own interests....and yes if you are a republican and you disagree on policy and not ideology, then you deserve respect. If you listen to glen beck and it makes sense you are an idiot, and you shouldn't be allowed to vote....i feel bad for the true republicans, the carl roves of the world have made your party a joke.
