Humans developed their unique ability to talk mainly so they could gossip with each other. This according to psychologist Dr. Nicholas Emler, who added that spending so much time on exchanging juicy social information is what has allowed us to build much bigger and more complex societies than other creatures.
Emler, who came to the 80 percent number by studying 300 volunteers, argues that while chimps, our closest relatives, are limited to societies of around 50 apes, it is gossip that allows us to feel a part of our much larger social grouping.
Then again, why would chimps have any use for gossip, as it is perfectly acceptable in their simian culture to literally throw poo.

I somewhat believe that, but only if you have no life, I mean 80% of your time is a lot! lol I would say the average person does it 25% of the time, at least the people I know.

80%????? That is ridiculous. I spend 80% of my time reading, doing art and work, and maybe 5% of my time shooting the breeze about other people. Maybe it's the reason I'm not a millionaire.

Maybe you personalize too much. Maybe this is a statistic about most people not all people.
