Compared to other countries, Americans spend a small percentage of their household income on food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics have an average family spending 5.7 percent of their earnings on meals and snacks, while the number is 8.6 in the U.K. and over 40 percent in countries like Jordan and Indonesia.
It hasn't always been this way -- Americans were spending 17 percent on food in the 1950s -- but advances in agriculture and livestock, as well as government subsidies to farmers, have knocked down costs considerably.
Judging by the size of many Americans, McDonald's dollar menu has also played a vital role in this decline.

It's good to know food prices are going down, but could this be because most Americans can't afford to buy all the food they need due to other high costs?

Are you kidding? They are eating far too much as it is! If they need to eat anymore they would all be dead from diabetes and heart disease.
