While in the U.S., David Blaine is busy freezing himself in ice cubes and Criss Angel perfects emo levitation, over in Britain, magician Derren Brown is putting his sleight of hand skills to actual use, by picking winning lottery numbers. On live TV, at the same time the real numbers were drawn, Brown revealed his own prediction which matched exactly. For all intents and purposes it seemed as though he had predicted six winning lottery numbers in real time. That's almost as cool as sawing a lady in half and finding her stuffed with money.
Unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to actually buy a ticket and win, since he admits the whole stunt is just a trick. Brown says he'll reveal how he did it on Friday night, and until then many people are speculating as to how he pulled it off. Guesses range from camera trickery and editing, a favorite of modern TV magicians, to electronic-ink balls, meaning the balls have tiny screens onto which the winning numbers were transmitted.
The explanation is sure either to stun audiences or make them shrug, saying, "Oh yeah, makes sense." The only question is, when someone's job is to misdirect you, can you really believe him when he explains himself?

The lotto numbers were probably pulled early and then they played back the drawing and said it was live when it really wasn't.

quite simple....he's on the west coast and the numbers were drawn hours before on the east coast....he could not buy a ticket because the lottery terminals shut down before the numbers are drawn....tell him to show real "magic" and pre-pick the numbers in the time zone he is in....

Nice start. Too bad you're tokin' on that weed. You might have figured it out.
The answer is:
Off course it's not live. All shows have a brief time delay to edit out accidental gaffs and indecencies. There may even be additional delays in this case to have a second party confirm the results or count all the balls to be sure their isn't any fraud. The Magician, or the network he works for has just found a way to tap into the early feed.

If he could really pick the lottery numbers he'd be famous already and you'd have heard of him long before now.

If he really could do this, he would not be wasting his time showing the world his talents. He would be spending his $$$ and winning lotteries every few years, not weekly, so they (we) would not put some sort of law against such great perfomance

What a trumped up story. I worked for one of the state lotteries for 7 yrs. The numbers are drawn 15 minutes before they are actually shown "Live" on TV.

I witnessed a mini version of a lottery draw on stage at Planet Hollywood. An amazing mentalist, Gerry McCambridge had audience members throw balls marked with their individual choice of one of 40-different numbers at six basketball nets. Each was random and could be changed at the last minute if desired. Overhead was a glas tube visible during his whole performance. In it he had written his predictions of the numbers chosen. When lowered and opened they matched the balls thrown into the hoops. Incredible stuff. This guy is better than Blaine.

You morons, it states in the article "he admits the whole stunt is just a trick." Why do you not all read the whole article before posting.

You disbelievers just crack me up. Ask yourself why you don't believe - really ask yourself. You're living in a very isolated world and blocking yourself off from so much. Oh well - in not too long from now you will see more than you could imagine.
