John Marcotte, a California man with a history of pulling social pranks, is collecting signatures to get the "California Protection of Marriage Act," which would ban divorce, on the ballot.Marcotte calls his voter initiative "the logical extension of Proposition 8," the controversial measure which last year added "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California," to the state's constitution.
Marcotte has tongue firmly in cheek -- his Web site is subtitled, "Safeguarding marriage from the evils of divorce," and supporters can buy a T-shirt of a chained-together bride and groom reading "You said, 'Til death do us part.' You're not dead yet."
But his point is valid -- since many of Prop 8 supporters cited defending traditional marriage as their reason for pushing for the gay marriage ban, shouldn't they also be supportive of the "California Protection of Marriage Act," which eliminates the greatest threat to marriage that exists?

no one, but no one has the right to tell me, or you, how to spend our lives. how dare anyone think that marraige is a obligation. when a marraige fails, who dares stand there and would say 'too bad,, your spouse is an abuser/liar/ thief,(filli in the blanks) and yo must stay
let anyone who belives htat move to a country that agrees with that abusive and horrific notion. go move to iraq or saudia arabia
my god. how disgraceful

You're about as ridiculous as they come. All of you who say, "Who is to say who I can and can't stay married to?" DON'T get married. Get a civil partnership or something of that nature. Marriage was originally strictly a religious thing. Marriage didn't go from being a man-made institution to a spiritual pillar. Who said you had to marry someone and stay married to them? Oh, I don't know, God? You don't believe in God? What good is marriage to you? There are other ways to live together and do what you want and get the tax breaks. "Oh I want to be able to remarry if he abuses me." Well, if you're protestant go for it, nobody condemns you. If you're catholic (or were and just didn't understand it), then you know that annulments are pretty easy to get when someone behaves in such manner. All angles covered. If you don't want to stay married forever, don't pretend that marriage wasn't a religious institution first and man-made second.

Just like nobody has the right to tell you what to do with your life, no one has the right to tell a gay how to live his/her life. That's the whole point of this.

No one in this country anymore takes a marriage commitment seriously. There are many people who get married with the idea that if it dosen't work out they will just move on. They leave behind them a path of destruction. What they fail to realize is that you have the same set of problems with a different person. The marriage vows are for better or worse, for richer or poorer. in sickness and in health, till death do us part. That does not mean until the next best person comes along. There are always exceptions for adultery which is rampant, and dangerous situations that make divorce a necessity. We live today in a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Anything goes, children suffer, and moms work 3 jobs to support their children, and there is some single dads out there being mom, because mom chose another man over their kids.

Are you kidding me!! What are women like me to do if Divorce is declared illegal? I was an abused wife that was helped by family friends to escape a man that was physically, mentally and emotional beat the crap out of me - so now if this passes I would of been breaking the law by escaping and divorcing this jerk? Even the Bible gives grounds for divorce. This guy needs to go back under his rock and stay there!

Man, you totally miss the point. Nobody is going to actually pass this law. It is satirical, meant to point out the hypocrisy of gay-marriage opponents.
Honestly, judging from the posts on here, about a third of the people posting even understand what the person is doing, if that. Pretty pointless...

As harsh as it sounds, this isn't a bad idea! People go into a marriage to play house and if they don't like it they get a divorce. it completely undermines any true or original sense of the word and what it means. I have been married for 7 years now with 3 beautiful boys. Has it been easy? No, not even close. But we have made it work. Marriage should eb the lifelong commitment that it was intended to be.

I think it would be completely stupid and selfish to ban divorce, because there are young girls out there getting married under the impression they are with Mr. Right only to be in a marriage of abuse and adultery.

Well Mike,
Thats what parents and god are for...to teach our children what is right..give them a solid base and understanding of the world arould them so they make right decisions and dont end up in divorce. That is what dating is for: to be with a person long enough to see all sides of them. And thats takes years..not months. Stop jumping into bed with everyone. Take time to get to know a person. If a "young girl" with stars in her eyes marries a loser...then who's fault is it? To many people go into a marriage knowing that they can just get out of it....too many people now days dont even know what it MEANS to take and keep a vow...Because parents have not instilled any sense of honor or responsibility in those kids they grow up believing everything, including marriage, is disposable..

That petition actually brings up a good point. If you support only heterosexual marriage, then you should be anti-divorce also. However, like some other people already brought up, this would lead to: less marriages, more domestic abuse (with both male and female victims), bigamy (people would remarry without getting a divorce), and probably higher incidences of spouses either running away or "mysteriously vanishing". It's kind of like the same thing with outlawing abortions: just because it's illegal, doesn't mean it will stop happening.

I do agree that there would be a drop in the number of married people, but I could also see a rise in the number of murder. jk, but you would know where I am coming from.

A ban on divorce???? You think the murder rate in this country is bad NOW, just try to force people to stay married to someone they can no longer stand.....
