A samurai sword isn't just a fun collectible for the anime fan or the martial arts film enthusiast. It is also a deadly weapon that can lop off body parts in one fell swoop.

Early Tuesday morning, John Pontolillo, a 20-year-old Johns Hopkins student, heard a sound coming from the garage of his off-campus house. So he grabbed his samurai sword, which he kept displayed in his room, and went to investigate. When a home invader lunged at him, Pontolillo struck 49-year old career criminal Donald Rice with his blade, severing his hand.

Rice, who had just been released from county lockup for auto theft, bled to death from his injury. Police took Pontolillo into custody, but since it's legal in Baltimore to possess a sword and to protect your property, charges are unlikely.

Hopkins student Diego Ardila, an acquaintance of Pontolillo, summed up the feelings of a stunned community when he stated, "You don't expect to hear that someone you know killed a guy with a samurai sword."

No, you don't.
