Back in 1990s, the most frequently banned books in schools and public libraries were classics such as "Catcher in the Rye," and "Of Mice and Men." This year none of those even made the the top 10 as, for the third year in a row, the ire of the righteous is instead pointed firmly at a picture book about penguins -- gay penguins.
Objections to "And Tango Makes Three," which is based on the true story of two male penguins raising a chick in the Central Park Zoo, included that it was "anti-family," "anti-religion," "unsuitable for the age group" and "anti-ethnic" (huh?).
The book's critics are also upset that the book doesn't depict the real-life ending, in which the male penguin couple eventually separated because one of the bachelor penguins caught the other with a female.
Maybe the book's authors are saving that final twist for the sequel. Although we're not sure how they're going to make that an appropriate "kids" book. Here are the top 10 most banned books of this year, according to the American Library Association:
1."And Tango Makes Three," by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
2. "His Dark Materials" trilogy, by Philip Pullman
3. "TTYL; TTFN; L8R, G8R" (series), by Lauren Myracle
4. "Scary Stories" (series), by Alvin Schwartz Bless Me,
5. "Ultima," by Rudolfo Anaya
6. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," by Stephen Chbosky
7. "Gossip Girl" (series), by Cecily von Ziegesar
8. "Uncle Bobby's Wedding," by Sarah S. Brannen
9. "The Kite Runner," by Khaled Hosseini
10. "Flashcards of My Life," by Charise Mericle Harper

They are gay for taking care of a baby?!? Perhaps they should see it as two responsible beings doing what is right. I swear these people who ban stuff like this have such personal issues.

That is so obvious!!! They are also some of the biggest hypocrites on the face of this planet. But, there has to be somebody out there to mind your business for you and tell you what you can or can't read. Right? WRONG!!! These big buttinskys need to mind their own affairs. I should be allowed to make my own decisions as to what I deem appropriate reading material. Remember the f-word...... FREEDOM!!!!!

why would you want to confuse children? if you want to read, then read it. that is the problems with liberal, you want to push your life on everybody. well i have a right to object to what i dont want my children reading. christians have just as much a right to voice our opinion as anyone else. and why do have to start name calling? that is another problem with liberals if someone disagrees with you then you want to start calling names.

I don't think Christians are stupid. It can be, although not always represented by the masses, a very good religion filled with great ethics, values, and morals. The hypocratic nature is almost the entire point of the religion as well. We all sin, all the time, and we should ask for forgiveness. When you ask for it, you automatically receive the forgiveness from "God", as long as you are sincerely remorseful. I have definitely been a hypocrite before, but I felt remorse for it after the fact, and hopefully my silent request to whomever is "running the show" will grant me forgiveness. I would definitely rather be a christian, than someone that calls christians stupid. It is hard to be righteous 24/7, and who can blame a human for making a bad judgment call with their own life.

Not all christians..I pride myself on loving Jesus and try to be the best christian that I can but to me loving God means loving all his people no matter what color, race, or creed. I would definately allow my children to read this book and then we could talk about it if need be. My husband and I have many different friends and some of them happen to be gay or lesbian and we treat them with the same respect as any other person, I believe that is the way God wants it.

No, MOST Christians are not that stupid.... only a select few who wish to pervert God's teachings "to love one another as I have loved you." They are more concerned with the "letter of the law" rather than the heart or the spirit of the law. It is behavior such as this that gives all Christians a very bad name.

Not all of us. Some of us are open minded, rational, loving people. I am a christian, but I support gay marriage. I dont see a point in the legalistic ways that some "christians" claim to live their lives by. The point of Christianity is supposed to be love. But most people use it as a way to exhibit their own agendas and criticize others, no matter what religion they would have chosen. The world today has gotten so turned around... If 2 penguins want to be gay, and an author wants to write a story about it, I dont see why people (who are simply afraid of what they dont understand) have to ban it, and try to censor what we read. All I'm trying to say is that fear is contagious. And just like a virus, it has the ability to get way out of control, and create situations like this. I think most Christians need to take a good long time to think about this : What would our God say to the way we've chosen to treat people who are homosexual? In what ways have you as a christian shown the love and compassion of Christ to others? Try not to contradict yourself too much, guys. You're making us look bad.

Some of them are. People just can't seem to see love in things. They are too wrapped up in political things that they can't see anything good.

NO-you're that stupid for thinking ALL Christians are stupid. You are the ignorant one, you're just too stupid and ignorant to realize it! You're NO different than those "Christians" that are ALL anti-gay. You are past the point of ignorant-your downright hypocritical and brain dead.

I have not read this book and probably will not simply because it is not a book I would be interested in. As a Christian my question would be did the Author actually say or insinuate that the penguins were homosexual? If the Author did say or insinuate that the penguins were indeed homosexual I would have to say that’s a pretty arrogant of the individual to assume that to be true. Since I do not know the Author I would (and this is just a gut feeling and not being stated as a fact) have to assume that they were either a homosexual with an agenda or a misguided individual trying to find some sort of evidence that homosexual behavior is found in animal groups thus it is a normal practice. I cannot blame parents of young children for being concerned about what their children are exposed to. We have to many people trying to influence children to except their beliefs or behavior as normal whether their parents approve or not. What next, will pedophiles be able to do the same? If a old monkey has a relation with a juvenile monkey would that mean it is okay for humans?

The true question is are non-Christians that stupid. To think it's not damaging to children to be exposed to anything that's pro-homosexual is the true definition of stupidity.
