Last month, General Motors announced that Saturn, the different kind of car company that we grew up with, is being phased out. With the numerous problems faced by the auto industry, GM has decided to focus on its core brands and send Saturn to the big scrap heap in the sky with the Gremlin and the DeLorean. In honor of Saturn, we offer up five other car companies that we would have rather said goodbye to first.
Hummer
It was cool to watch Schwarzenegger drive one of these back in the day, but does anyone still need one of these? Aside from the fact you have to fuel it with pure menace and the souls of the innocent, they don't even look cool anymore. They were cool when they were hardcore military in your own driveway. The H3 looks like it drove out of Michael Bay's wet dreams.
Lexus
Nothing against the cars personally, Lexus makes a pretty set of wheels with some seats strapped to them. The problem is where they've been unfairly culturally positioned. What we mean is, strippers go around calling themselves Lexus now. Once your car has achieved stripper-name stature, it's time to pack things up, or at least re-brand and come back as something new. You're never going to see PT Cruiser dancing to Whitesnake, but you'll see Lexus.
Lamborghini
Does anyone drive these? There's a 90 percent chance these exist to be the podium on which bikini models rest at car shows, and while technically there's nothing wrong with that, for a fraction of the price all those girls could sit in rocking chairs and the rest of us wouldn't have to stare and wonder where the groceries fit inside a Diablo.
Smart
There's something shameful about a car that makes you want to try to flip it over when you look at it, and which takes up exactly the same amount of room whether you park properly or not.
Aston Martin
This one's pure jealousy. Have you ever seen anyone who isn't James Bond in an Aston Martin? And if you did, wouldn't you immediately think "James Bond wannabe"? The Aston Martin can only serve to make others angry; it'd be best if it just shuffled off and left the rest of us alone.

if your going to post this kind of argument at least use car brands that are made by GM or at least loosely affiliated - Lexus? its a damn toyota! they rebrand it a lexus in the states cause no ones dumb enough to buy a 80K$ toyota - same with Infinity and Acura - i do agree the hummers gotta go - but if ur any kind of car fan u'd never wish to see the lambo or aston banished! great site guys

A fair point, perhaps we'd just like to see the guys who actually own the Lambos and Astons banished...

Have you ever driven a saturn? It should have been phased out a long time ago. One of the worst car companies ever.

Ok. So you are armchair quarterbacking.
It's all in how you take care of it. I like the H3. Far from the H1 It was too square and stiff for me.
My Last Mercury lasted me 12 years without a motor, or Tranny rebuild. 200k plus
My Crown Vic,(Police version) has 5 years on it with out mechanical work.150k
My Saturn is a good car, but not for vacations, or long life. 100k plus with work
You obviously haven't looked at the Smart car. Everything (sic) green, and #$%^ from the Government, throw it out!
The Smart car is well built,( I've looked at the design), and it looks fun to drive. Yes they are small, but still looks like fun. I would take one on vacation!
I want to custom build a new Challenger that would scare the hide off of the guy in Vanishing Point! Arrrgh-Arrrgh-Arrgh!

The only car I agree with getting rid of is the Hummer, but we should keep the smart car.

We all need to remember the fact that this guy is too young to know what he is talking about. That is obvious by the fact that he claims he grew up with the Saturn brand. Saturn is only 20 years old for Petes sake. No big loss.

I have a saturn aura. which i feel is a very classy car. the ride is beautiful and the inside interior. they have alot of beautiful and very sharp cars out. i have only driven pontiacs in the past, but now would not hesitate to purchase another one. If they were not so popular, then why are so so many people driving them. Look at how many vues were sold. Big mistake to get rid of saturns

You are a complete moron if you think your Saturn Aura is a classy car! Well it is only compared to the Pontiacs you've driven your whole life. You have wasted your money on two of the worst kinds of cars ever produced! A 15 year old Lexus or Acura will outlast and drive better than any brand new Saturn or Pontiac. Try reading consumer reports one time! They know! Have fun wasting your money on humiliating, rattling, plastic cars!

This would be to smart of an idea for GM to close down a non-union shop. The exec's said they need concessions from the union so they close a nonunion shop. What else would you expect, my next car will be a Ford.

I'm sorry, but I need to set the record strait. Saturn was an inovative idea that GM should have carried to other divisions. The cars were inovative at first, but internal jealosies and infighting prevented the Saturn Division from getting reasearch and development support. Their customer service, and customer loyalty is very high, has always been. No one is perfect. My brother has a 1990 SL with 325,000 miles on it. The older ones never rust, couldn't dent. I storngly reccomend a book called "Learning From Saturn" for Cornell University Press...

Sigh. I'm not moved to comment usually, but dudes, come on. read the article. I appreciate you're "car guys" and maybe you don't get out and interact with people much, but did you happen to catch the proposed reasons for phasing out the Aston Martin? James Bond jealousy? Do you think that's serious? Lexus because strippers are named Lexus?
Jokes, kids. They were jokes.

I remember when Saturn was a new company, and there was nothing worse than those first gen cars. I buy Dodge, and they have'nt let me down yet. 1997 Grand Caravan with almost a quarter of a million miles (246785) with no major engine or trans issues. Good bye Saturn, I can only hope that the import manufacturers start to devour themselves next. Anyone that in good conscience buys a foreign brand automobile should not be considered a true American. I do not care that they have been manufactured here in the U.S., the end fact is- your money was sent to a foreign country when you purchased the car. Way to support the economy in America!! (my brother and sister in law- with your stupid ass prius)

I'll take a Hummer H-1 any day. Major cool. Keep the others, too. There are too few of the exotic car makes to make a fuss over. Lighten up. Car guys know their value. Smart Car, not so much. Looks silly. For all it costs, there's other cars that are bigger and get better mileage. Go figure. For it's size it should get at least 60 mpg and cost less than $10K, but no. Not close.
