It's kind of like moving to Ireland and requesting that everyone drop the "Mc" from their names. At least that's how people in Taos, N.M., reacted when new owners took over a local hotel and told employees that they'd need to "shorten" their Hispanic names to something a little more, well, "American." Larry Whitten moved to Taos from Texas to take over the newly renamed Whitten Inn and threw down the gauntlet:
1. No speaking Spanish in front of the boss.
2. Everyone's fired and has to re-apply for their jobs.
3. It's "strongly suggested" that employees shorten their long, silly Spanish names. ("Who has the time to say 'Marcos?' Why not Mark or Bill?" That's actually a real example.)
The majority population in Taos is Hispanic, with roots in the area going back hundreds of years. They weren't really happy with Larry's (formerly Lorenzo?) ideas, and protests erupted. Lorenzo responded by playing the victim card and putting some token Spanish phrases on the hotel's welcome sign.

Happy to hear that things are going well at the Whitten Inn Boycott. We have been out there for 8 weeks. Doing good and getting the message out in every which way. Happy to hear that employees have attorneys and are working hard to do what is necessary. Remember that New Mexico is abilingual state and spanish is one of those languages.

Protesters work hard everyday so that travelors will not rest at the Whitten Inn. Whitten plans to have a great winter with the skiers. If you send the message out to all of your friends and families about the discrimination that Whitten imposed to the employees that have worked there for at least 24 years, we can put this guy out.Racism is wrong any time any place.

First of all I am a spanish speaking Texas native, and I in no way found this to be racist at all.We are americans and our language is english, and it is unfair to speak another language in a work place.I know for a fact that spanish is spoken purposely in a work place to bad mouth others. That's been going on forever! He did not change anyone's names he just pronouned them in english.DUH!!! what weirdos. And if he was so racist why is his place of employment full of 'hispanics'? whatever!Grow up,get over it.Soooo stupid. My brother's name is Pete and we call him Pedro he likes it......What stupid weak minded dummies!Don't let 'Martin' or 'Marcos' step out of the motel and into the real world (America) cause it's tough out here.((((I support Larry))))you are not a racist!!!! from a spanish girl

I can understand speaking English for safety reasons. Speak what you like when you're off the clock, but to take care of guests, to train employees, direct employees and for safety procedures, speak English. That's all I have a problem with. The idea of changing your name is stupid and racist. Period.

What a shock that he is from Texas. And he speaks of himself in the 3rd person...Nothing should stay the same for 40 years Larry!! Including that douchey moustache!
