Comedy Central's new show "Secret Girlfriend" is shot from a certain perspective -- the viewer sees everything from his own point-of-view. It's a camera technique that we haven't seen used to such dramatic effect since ... well, since the last time we watched a porn video. What could have been a weird gimmick may actually work. "It originated in our mobile phone series that the TV show is based on -- in that, your 'secret girlfriend' leaves you video voicemail messages, and the direction is all directed at you," clarify the show's creators, Ross Novie and Jay Rondot. "P.O.V. porn was only an inspiration for how we ran the set and treated our employees."
Our protagonist's saga is well-stocked with gorgeous women, including his quasi-deranged ex, Mandy (Alexis Krause, pictured), and an innocent blonde crush (Sara Fletcher).
As far as dramatic dilemmas go, his is a pretty enviable one: Life is damn good when your biggest quandary is deciding whom to sleep with next. But Mandy's character spells trouble of the sort that normally ends with restraining orders. She's an aggressive vixen who knows that the right below-the-belt maneuver will bring our hero back into her clutches (and her bed.) "If the sex is mind-blowing, it's pretty hard to leave," explains the criminally hot Krause. We couldn't agree more.
Read on for more about the polite limits of stalking and how a jar of tears might lead to a pity beej.
Krause's Mandy is a sexual vigilante, determined to get her ex-boyfriend back at all costs. In the pilot episode, that means letting herself into his apartment unannounced so that she can stage an impromptu guitar serenade in the nude. The actress isn't quite so brazen in real life. "Maybe it's psycho that I'm not psycho," she says. "Maybe I'm too trustworthy. I've truly never even searched a call log in a cell phone, or checked somebody's email -- but everybody else that I know has. That's a total, normal thing to do." (As show co-creator Jay Rondot attests, "I've waited naked, except for a guitar, for my ex to come home. Mandy is based on me.")
So what is the best way to get over being dumped, according to Krause? "You mean besides faking a pregnancy?" she laughs. "Just have the support of your family and friends. As long as you're not left along for too long -- that's when you start talking yourself into doing really bad things."
Astute viewers of the "Secret Girlfriend" pilot may also recognize a familiar face: Angela Trimbur, best known for her turn on MTV's "Road Rules," not to mention a particularly saucy "Entourage" cameo. Trimbur cameos as a come-hither stranger who tries to manhandle our protagonist in a swimming pool. She's had her fair share of experiences with insane exes. "An ex once sent me a baby food jar full of his tears from crying over me," she says. "I thought it was sweet -- so I gave him one last BJ." And ladies, take note -- Trimbur has a small piece of romantic advice for you: "The best fail-safe seduction technique is to tell him you're on the rag ... but that hasn't stopped you before ... and then coyly bite your lip."
Share your thoughts on that rather unconventional strategy in the comments -- and tell us what's the craziest thing you've ever done to an ex. The debut of Comedy Central's "Secret Girlfriend" airs tonight at 10:30 p.m.
