We're not sure why, but this story feels like a beautiful dream come to life. NASA has announced a plan to launch a missile at the moon this Friday.

The projectile will travel at twice the speed of a bullet, and will leave a huge frickin' crater on the moon's South pole (presumably selected to spare Moon Base Santa).

So, why are they doing this? We decided to investigate just what the moon did to deserve this.

The obvious first guess was that it's because NASA folk are big fans of "Mr. Show with Bob and David:"



Turns out the real reason is much stupider. They're looking for some ice, apparently, so astronauts will stop complaining about having to drink their Moonhattans "neat."

Still, we think this is worth a look, but if you can't catch the live feed of the launch this Friday, you can make do with this pretty cool simulation:
