In the beginning, there was only Mario, an ape named Donkey and Pauline, the damsel in distress. But 28 years and over 200 titles later, the Mushroom Kingdom is now chock full of all sorts of bizarre creatures.

How many? Well, at least enough to fill out the pieces of the officially licensed Super Mario Chess Set. While it's no surprise that Mario is cast as the king, instead of doing the logical thing and crowning Princess Peach queen, the honor has been bestowed on Luigi. Yes, Mario's brother.

So, that's just awkward.
