The hormonal effects of oral contraceptives may be weaning women off masculine-looking men.

It is known that women tend to prefer the looks of square-jawed, strong-featured men during ovulation, and men with softer, more caring, features the rest of the month. And now comes a new study suggesting that since the pill prevents ovulation, it may be influencing broad societal attitudes on male attractiveness.

The researchers acknowledge they are a long way from proving anything definitively. However, the evolution of leading men, from heavily masculine, pre-pill stars such as Kirk Douglas and Steve McQueen, to today's prettier hunks, like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, seems to support their theory.
