The hormonal effects of oral contraceptives may be weaning women off masculine-looking men.It is known that women tend to prefer the looks of square-jawed, strong-featured men during ovulation, and men with softer, more caring, features the rest of the month. And now comes a new study suggesting that since the pill prevents ovulation, it may be influencing broad societal attitudes on male attractiveness.
The researchers acknowledge they are a long way from proving anything definitively. However, the evolution of leading men, from heavily masculine, pre-pill stars such as Kirk Douglas and Steve McQueen, to today's prettier hunks, like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, seems to support their theory.
It also suggests Zac Efron may have a long career ahead of him.
