Video of a mysterious ring in the clouds over Moscow has bloggers abuzz about whether it's a UFO, a sign from the heavens or a scene from a crappy Roland Emmerich movie.

None of those theories are right, according to Moscow's weather service, which claims it's a rare but natural weather occurrence.

"Several fronts have been passing through Moscow recently," a spokesperson said. "There was an intrusion of Arctic air, too. The sun was shining from the west -- this was how the effect was produced. This is purely an optical effect, although it does look impressive."

Environmentalists blamed the odd halo in the sky on air pollution from Moscow's factories, but the weather service says that smog is not to blame. Windy conditions in the area would have prevented any effect from Russian industrial emissions.

Yakov Smirnoff could not be reached for comment, but he would likely have a humorous observation about how Russian cloud rings are different than American cloud rings. What a country!
