UPDATE: Reports via Twitter and CNN are that the balloon has landed empty. We're all hoping this doesn't mean the boy fell out. And given CNN's habit of occasionally reporting BS on the fly, we're still hopeful. If ever there were an appropriate time to use the phrase "WTF?" it came today near Fort Collins, Colo. That's where a 6-year-old boy climbed in to his parents' homemade hot-air balloon/inflatable flying saucer and floated away. At first we thought about how totally crazy and cool a ride that must be, but then we remembered how scary the high-dive was when we were 6 and got all sad and concerned.
While the balloon has been seen precariously swaying from side to side, as far as we can tell it seems like it would be much harder to fall out of than a normal balloon with traditional basket.
And the good news is that it looks like some sort of daring rescue may be in the works. The Colorado National Guard was launching a Kiowa helicopter at last report to try to assess the situation. Godspeed, everyone.

Fortunately, it turns out that the boy, after having been scolded by his father, had run off to the attic to play, crawling into an empty box to take a nap, and was not in the balloon when it got loose.
