Know your state nickname, state flag and state bird? Well, neither does anyone else -- and you can be damned sure they don't know their state motto, so why not help out by making one up? That's the idea behind the Huffington Post's latest scheme to get more free content from the general public. HuffPo is running the best contest since Tom Sawyer's "Fence Paint-Off," asking readers to submit their ideas for funny state mottos. The grand prize? They'll add your winning selections to their existing grid of actual state mottos, and corresponding state-motto mockery.
Our disappointment at the booty being offered, however, is exceeded only by our own competitive instincts. As such, we'll go them one better. Give us your suggestions, and we'll publish them in our comments section and we'll email HuffPo a link to this post so they can pick through your ideas.
To start you off, here are a few of our ideas for state mottos:
New Jersey
Go ahead, say "What exit?" We dare you.
California
Always remember your "safe word."
Delaware
Welcome to De ... um, bye!
Maryland
Manly deeds, womanly words. (Wait, that's their real motto!)
Alaska
Just in case, have you ever governed a state before?
Idaho
You da what???
North Carolina
One big family.
Pennsylvania
Like the South, but with cheesesteaks.
Wyoming
Why not?
Kansas
I don't think you're in the other 49 states anymore, Toto.
