Soupy Sales, legendary comedian and actor has passed away -- leaving the world of comedy with one less icon. Sales made slapstick a staple in the lives of a generation of kids back in the '50s and '60s and perfected the pie-in-the-face gag. Sales achieved infamy when he was forced to do his kids show on New Year's in 1965 and told the viewers to sneak into their parents' rooms and take money from their wallets and mail it to him. When money actually started arriving, he apologized but was suspended, arguably one of the most awesome unintentional pranks ever pulled.
And as evidence of the existence of a real comedy Circle of Life, parody song legend Weird Al Yankovic celebrates his 50th birthday today. With a career now spanning 30 years, Yankovic is a measure by which non-parody musicians now gauge their success. If you get parodied by Weird Al, you know you're famous.
With one legend dying and another celebrating a milestone, we can't help but wonder if that means, somewhere in the world, a new comedy legend is being born. Statistics tell us he or she will likely be born in India or China, so we may never get to appreciate the comedy (outside of a Bollywood film or a movie featuring flying, kung-fu vampires), but you never know. If he's born in the U.S. then odds are it will be the next Duggar kid on that TLC show "18 and Counting." Wherever he is, here's hoping hecan somehow take pie gags and parody songs to the next level.
