Tommy Christopher is Asylum's Joss Whedon Correspondent.Halloween, and perhaps Christmas, came early for "Firefly" fans who caught a faux-glimpse of the old Serenity captain Mal Reynolds on Nathan Fillion's new ABC series "Castle." OK, so technically it was Castle dressed in a non-copyrighted "space cowboy" costume, but still ...
Why do we care? Because Firefly was the best gorram TV show ever -- just ask any of the show's particularly devoted fans. While science-fiction fandom can often veer into unhealthy territory, Browncoats largely get a pass because of the way their love object was so tragically cut short. The Fox network pulled the plug on the sci-fi/western mashup after only half a season.
Fillion gives fans a reminder of those few glorious cattle-rustlin', Reaver-evadin' weeks for "Castle"'s Halloween episode.
Keep reading to check out the video, plus find out how I became the first person to wear "Firefly" in the White House.
First of all, there are cows in space if you bring them there!
While I haven't written any Jayne/Simon slashfic, I still think I'm uniquely qualified to pass judgment on whether this scene is bittersweet, or just bitter.
In April, I drove to D.C. to cover the Tea Party protests and to attend the White House press briefing. Since it was sunny in New Jersey, I assumed I wouldn't need a coat (or an umbrella). When I got there, it was cold and rainy, so I donned the only protection I had -- my hand-painted leather sci-fi jacket with the giant Blue Sun logo on the back. As such, I am, as far as I know, the only person ever to wear "Firefly" garb in the White House.
For me, this is a too-painful reminder of the demise of an awesome show. Let us know what you think.

As long as it's Nathan Fillion wearing it I'm happy! I might just watch the whole series now on Blu-ray for the 20th time!

Oh, those opening moments on Castle were PERFECT. I miss Mal so much!! I laughed really hard when I saw that costume--I recognized it from the first frame!

Serenity was one of the greatest shows ever with an equal amount of comedy and drama. it was pulled way to soon before the 80 year old man making the decisions on scheduling and ratings could understand it or realize some shows take awhile to get a following. I bet when the movie came out and made millions they realized their mistake. networks can be very stupid and that's why cable will be their death.

It was shiny! I loved the flashback, what I hate is the false hope that anything will ever come of it- hint hint - like more prequel Dark Horse comics. I will buy every copy I see and hand it out like pamphlets to get more people. I remember when I seen the 1st commercial for Serenity. I can still feel the goosebumps. It was like I had had this hallucination that had finally been proven to be true. Will Mal ever get Inara- especially now that she has gone V. What about Wash and Zoe's baby from Heart of Gold. Did Mal ever find out YoSafBridge's real name? Will Nishka ever stop torturing poor souls? Why oh why Joss Whedon did you have to kill Book before he told us all about That life! Did Simon and River's parents KNOW that the special school was a mind messing freak camp? I'm only comforted by the fact that I am not alone.

I just finished watching the Firefly series with my husband on DVD. (He'd seen it four or five times.) I loved it, but I'm sick that it was so SHORT! Can't wait to see Serenity, which we also have on DVD, but then what do I do for my fix? I guess I'll have to watch the series a few more times...

There was a shoutout to Buffy in that same episode. But I loved the Firefly reference.

Tea Partiers or present era Browncoats? Because between the Obama White House and the Democrats' run comgress remind me a lot of the Blue Sun corporation.
